The first German Arts Festival, two years ago. was launched with a grant from the Goethe Institute to honor D r. H. Frederick Peters, PSU professor of German and comparative literature. D r. Peters also heads the C e n tra l E u ro pean S tu dies C e n te r and founded the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik. a summer program now in its 16th year. Puppets, films, vocal and instrumental music, drama, mime, special art and docu­ mentary exhibits highlight this year's festival. I t will open at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 23, with a performance by Albrecht Roser. a puppe leer from Stuttgart, in the Caroline Berg Swann Audi­ torium at the Portland A rt Museum. 1219 SW Park. Roser's “Clown Gustaf and Ensemble" will present a random series of comedy and other scenes intended for an audience over 15 years of age. Portland teacher Margaret Doud has been selected as an o u t s t a n d in g e le m e n t a r y teacher of America for 1973 by a national publication. The awards volume “O ut­ standing Elem entary Teach ers of America” will feature Miss Doud in its 1973 edi­ tion. Miss Doud was selected by a national board of educa tors, industrialists and ser­ vice organisation presidents for her talents in the class room, contributions to re­ search. administrative abili ties, civic service and pro­ fessional recognition. A veteran teacher. Miss Doud has taught youngsters in grades 1-5 in schools in Michigan and Oregon for 13 years. Currently she teaches reading to students in grades 1-4 a t Sabin E le m e n ta ry School. Miss Doud is now eligible to receive one of five O ut­ standing Elem entary Teacher of the Y e a r A w a rd tr o ­ phies. If she wins, Sabin School will receive an unre­ stricted grant of $500.
