A public hearing on pro
posed amendments to State
Health Division rules per
taming to methods of deter
mining alcoholic content of
blood will he held in Room
12 of the State Office Build
ing. Salem.
The proposals
include the approval of two
additional types of breath
testing devices for use by
Oregon state and local police.
Both new devices are elec
tronic methods which per
form the entire blood alcohol
analysis automatically and
will print out the breath test
results.
One of Salem's most popu
lar tourist attractions, the
guided trip to the tower of
the State Capitol, was started
for the current season on
Memorial Day, it was an
nounced by Victor Fryer,
travel information director
for the Highway Division.
Trips to the tower are
scheduled every half hour
from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and
from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. seven
days a week, Mrs. Fances
Bell, chief of the Capitol
Guide Service, said.
Regu
lations require that those 18
years of age and under must
be accompanied by an adult.
Mrs. Bell pointed out that
there are 121 steps in the
spiral staircase leading to the
top of the tower. There is
no elevator.
When one reaches the top
of the tower, he has an un
surpassed view of Salem and
the surrounding countryside.
This is particularly true on a
clear day when the moun
tains can be seen in ail their
splendor. These include Mt.
Hood. M t. Jefferson. M t. St.
Helens. M t. Adams, and the
Three Sisters.
It also pro
vides one a closeup view of
the Pioneer standing atop
the tower.
