attends Monroe High School
and shows that she's parti
cularly proud that she s
Black. She shows this by
studying the hardest, achiev
ing the highest grades and
expressing her concern for
others the most.

a Black. The other minori
ties are in much the same
position:
There are some
Spanish oriented courses, but
they are not taught by Chi
canos: and there is one In
dian teacher, but she does
not teach in Indian culture.
Another problem that con
fronts many Black students
is that they are not allowed
to graduate. They are ad
mitted to school under the
Education Opportunities pro
gram which is for minorities
and disadvantaged whites.
Having received elementary
and high school educations
that do not prepare them for
college, they are placed in
remedial classes their Fresh
man year. These courses dt
not provide credits towart
their degrees, so they canno
graduate in four years. At
the end of the fourth year
financial assistance is ended,
so they cannot stay in school
and earn their degrees.
Both Poe and Noble place
much of the blame on the
Black community of Portland.
Although most of the stu
dents are from Portland,
they are isolated and for
gotten when they go to Cor
vallis. The students at Port
land State get most of the
attention. The students at
the University of Oregon in
Eugene have a small Black
community to go to for en
couragement. But the Black
students in Corvallis, a small
racist community, have no
where to turn.
They feel
that visits by Blacks from
Portland and Portland people
attending the functions they
sponsor at the school would
help them by showing that
they do have community
support. Also, scholarships
students to OSU.
Although the picture looks
dim. both Poe and Noble
have hope for the future of
Black stu d en ts at OSU.
With both of them in student
government, they will have a
voice in student affairs. They
feel strongly that Black stu
