Assemblies of the Greater
Portland Council of Churches
and the Oregon Council of
Churches will come together
in a very historic meeting.
On Friday evening, June 1st,
at Trinity Episcopal Church
the two Councils will delib
erate and decide upon a new
constitution. This constitu
tion when ratified will create
an entirely new ecumenical
agency for both the City of
Portland and the State of
Oregon. This assembly will
climax a year's work author
ized by both Assemblies and
carried out under the direc

the apparent consolidation of
two large councils. They are
attempting to bring into be

into account today's facts and
attitudes about the Church
and the world and the way
the two can be brought into
meaningful conjunction, at
the same time recognizing
the necessity of deepening
and strengthening the "theo
logical" and “spiritual" basis
of church life.
The new constitution leans
heavily on the assumption
that organization, work and
governance must grow in
healthy fashion and through
maximizing to the fullest
extent “grass roots" partici
pation and the supporting
and strengthening of ecum
enical work at neighborhood
and community levels. The
new machinery is program
med for service to churches
to help encourage their ex
pression of needs and issues;
then to respond to these, and
through that response build
policy and prioritize time,
money and the utilization of
staff and volunteers.
