PART II
Bishop II. H. B rookins,
A M E Bishop of the Zambia,
Malwai, Rhodesia. Tanzania
and Zaire, and until July
1972, pastor of F irst A M E
Church, Los Angeles, speak
ing to a conference of A M E
Ministers in Stockton re
cently, noted the progress of
the people of Zambia.
"In
1964, they had about four
college graduates, out of six
million people. I)r. Kaunds
is about a three-time Ph.D.
He has been to thia country
several times and has w ritten
about four books, and is a
very, very resourceful, crea
live, sober minded leader.
He is regarded as one of the
more balanced leaders on the
continent today, and one of
the world figu res, inciden
tally.
“W ith six million people,
there are now more than
4,000 educated, or what you
might call 'super educated'.
Then you've got another
10,000 who have finished
high school. Then you've got
others who have had some
limited schooling.
"The literacy rate in Zam
bia is about 30 per cent,
literacy in the sense that we
would refer to literacy. This
does not mean that they
don't understand their Ian
guage, when you start talk
ing about reading, writing
and arithmetic and being
able to participate at that
level."
"There are about 72 tribes,
and they speak three or four
different dialects, which dom
inate the country.
They
don't speak Swahili; they
speak that in Tanzania.
In
Zambia they speak Shoenack,
Binibay, and Zoolu. Down in
the Belgian Congo, they speak
French.
Over in Malawai
they speak mainly Zoolu. In
Rhodesia they speak pri
marily Bimbay.
“You have these tribal Ian
guages which they speak
exceptionally well, and then
ones who speak English,
which is rapidly becoming
the national language, inci
dentally, and all of the edu
cated folks speak English as
well as we do, and better
than most of us. And they
ran speak it as affluently and
follow you as swiftly as you
ran pour it out. This is the
genius about them.
Don't
think that they are not ‘with
it’, they are ahead of most of
us; they are 'super intelli
gent'.
"The real challenge in
Africa is in the area of health
and education; and then there
is housing and the whole
economy of that country.
The distorted views, the
mixed up prejudicial pictures
and films that have come
over hear, don't do anything
but mix up the picture and
even Blacks don't understand
what they are talking about,
when thev discuss Africa.
“A M E wise, we're almost
non existent, not because of
our faith or commitment, but
-because of our lark of re
sources.
“Unless we make a major
comitment of some magni
tude, we shall not be able to
retain creditability on the
continent of Africa. When 1
say major, I mean money in
the millions, technicians, mis
sionaries on a mission, bis
hops beyond ceremonialism,
laymen who want to really
help.
Episcopal baby s itte rs ,
they don't need that; they
dont need a tribal ecclesiasti
cal chief; they need help,
substance, seriousness, and
input. Just to say 'I went to
Africa and I saw.' so what?
You have to do something;
like here, but only on a
wider scale.
“I went to the Bishops'
Council in law isville, Ky.,
recently, and presented this
situation. For the first time,
they made a commitment.
For the next year and a half
or two years, they will direct
the missionary budget of this
church, which comes to some
thing like a half million to
Africa.
Now that is still
nothing but token, but it is
gigantic based on what we
have done.
“W ith that budget, outside
resources and some serious
laymen goving over and some
trained m issionaries
and
some young folks, we might
recapture what we had some
100 years ago, when we first
went over there.
