Over 500,000 signatures in
favor of government support
for OIC (Opportunities In
dustrialization Centers) were
expected to be presented to
P resident Nixon by this
week.
Dr. Leon Sullivan, founder
of the manpower training
organization, announced that
the petitions would be pre
sented to the President and
Congress during a national
OIC pilgrimage to be held on
the grounds of the Capitol.
Nixon administration pro
posals to cut back federal
funding for OIC and channel
all manpower-money through
rtry
governm ents under
revenue sharing have made
the demonstration and peti
tion necessary. OIC spokes
men said.
Dr. Sullivan warned that
many OIC programs could
become patronage tools for
mayors or be eliminated al
together under the new plan.
OIC. which has programs
in 110 cities, is the largest
non profit m inority man
power training and place
ment organization in the
country. Over 150,000 mi
nority workers, mostly Black
have been trained and placed
into jobs in its eight year
existence.
