REPRESENTATIVES KAFOURY, McCOY, PRIESTLEY
by I)on Chambers, Adminis
trative Assistant to Repre
sentative Wally Priestley
Now that the legislature
has passed the Governor’s
Tax Plan, with the election
set for May 1, it is turning
towards other issues.
On
Monday of this week the
House of R ep resen tatives
passed a Shield Bill for the
protection of newsgatherers.
This measure will allow the
press to investigate matters
of public concern without the
same fear t h a t existed
that some representative of
the establishment would per
secute the reporter for his
zeal. Wally Priestley voted
for this bill, and also gave it
support through the com
mittee process. "This is only
the first step in protecting
persons from a rapacious
authority where that author
ity is threatened by their
investigations. A first step
in returning society to the
control of the people instead
of the reverse which is the
present state of affairs.”
R ep resen tative Priestiey,
in his capacity as a member
of the House Committee on
Labor and Industry, is at
tending hearings on the log
export bill in Coos Bay this
week. His findings are that
it appears that the large
timber interests are attemp
ting to rape the Northwest
of all of its first grade
timber, move on to greener
ground, and leave ourselves

with a deforested wasteland.
All steps must be taken, he
believes, to prevent t h i s
from happening, and the first
step in this regard is to
bring these facts to a high
level of public awareness.
The Federal Government
has dismissed the phoney
charges against t h e five
young people who were ar
rested in Bend last week,
while purportedly taking
clothes and food to needy
Native Americans in Wound
ed Knee, South Dakota. A
Hearing has been scheduled
before the House Committee
on Transportation to deter
mine if the State Police acted
within their authority in this
m atter.
R ep resen ta tiv e
Priestley is a member of this
Committee and pushed for
this hearing. It is a sorry
day when the good will ex
pressed by the conduct of
the "Bend Five”, is met by
such unlicensed and brutal
conduct as that of the gov
ernment in this affair.

"Also through grow ing

that Yes, we are indeed our

Yes, it

Yes, I must

Yes, I must

The ceremony Friday was
arranged by Henderson and

expect the companies where
they do business to become
