Senior Citizen
of the Month
Life has always been very interesting to Clara
Isabel Bartholomew, Senior Citizen, because she
has been involved in so many activities.
She taught music in the schools, directed
operattas, orchestras, choirs, choruses, wrote
poetry, wrote plays, is a church organist, plays the
organ frequently on many programs.
Rut she
thinks telephone reassurance at the Senior Adult
Service Center is the most rewarding activity of
her life.

Advisory committee
petitions available
Petitions are available for
citizens who may wish to
serve on one of the three
citizen Area Advisory Com­
mittees. the Portland school
administration has announc
ed. And the hunt is also on
for student committee mem
hers for the 1973 1974 year
as well.
The committees w ere
created in 1970 to provide a
mechanism for citizen and
student input into the de
cision making process of the
district and to provide as
sistaol to Area Superinten
dents.
Each committee is com
posed of seven adults and
two students. Students are
selected by the Board of
Education from a group de
signated by t h e Student
Councils in each of the public
high schools in Portland. The
Board of Eduction meets
with those nominated and
selects t wo from each area to
serve on the committees.
Each of the student members
are full-fledged voting mem
bers and participate fully and
freely in discussion and de­
bate
Students serve for
one-year. Students serving
on the committees this year
include:
Area 1 - Leslie White
and David Bledsoe; Area 2 -
Suzanne Blanchard and Patti
Bither; Area 3 - Katie
Joseph and Kenneth Garrett.
Information has been sent
to each of the high school
principals by the Area Super
intendents with details of the
selection process.
I all. four vacancies for
adults exist on each of the
three citizen area advisory
committees. Adult are re
commended by a Review
Panel, appointed by th e
Board of Education and from
that list the Board appoints
members of the committees.
Student nominees are also
to be selected and names
forwarded to the Information
office by the May 11 dead
line. Forms for this, and for
b io g ra p h ic a l inform ation,
have been provided all high
school principals for trans
mittal to student councils for
action.
Petitions for adults are
available from the Informa
tion office and each of the
school buildings in the city.
Students can obtain informa
tion by directly contacting
the building principals or
student council presidents.
