P ortJand/O bserver PORTLAND aO ORSERVER The American Civil Liber ties Union and the School Board of 8andy Union High have announced their agree ment on certain issues stem ming from the February 26 Sandy High School assembly featuring a multi media reli gious production, “The Sixth Door". The following statement was issued by Gary M. Hui lock, Attorney at la w , in behalf of the School Board of Sandy Union High School. We believe that the con stitutional provision of sep aration of church and state means that: Keligious in struction is a private con cern. Public schools cannot aid one religion, aid all reli gions, prefer one religion or no religion above another, or prefer believers to non bo lievers. Public schools can not require or influence a person to go to or remain away from religious servires; they cannot urge, persuade or force anyone to engage in or refrain from religious acts or to profess religious beliefs or disbeliefs; they cannot reward, punish or discrimi nate against anyone for pro- fession of religious beliefs, disbeliefs or no beliefs. The Board, with the assis lance of staff and legal counsel, will s o o n adopt policy guidelines concerning religious activities in the schools to carry out this position statement. W ith respect to the con stitutional guarantees of free dom of expression for stu dents and staff we re affirm the position of the Board that the school shall I n * operated so as to encourage full exchange of views not only as is legally required of us but in furtherance of our goals ax an educational in stitution. To assure that the policies of the Board with respect to freedom of expression are understood and fully rarried out. a review of our practices is being undertaken with the assistance of staff and coun set. Revised guidelines will bi* Issued al the earliest possible time. Finally, we commend the staff and members of the Board for their dedication to the schiNil program and their willingness to invest heavily ol their time in meeting the complex issues arising from their responsibilities. Disciples appear in Portland There are four good rea sons why Andrae Crouch and the Disciples are one of the World's most successful and durable Jesus Music groups. These four reasons are: An drae Crouch. Sandra Crouch. Billy Thedford and Perry Morgan. Rarely do you find four in d iv id u a lly talented |N*r formers who work so well together; dedicating them selves to the ministry that each one feels as his parti cular railing that o f spreading the Good News through Jesus Music. Because of their dedica tion. the Disciples, as a group, have been together a total of six years. Whenever COGIC Youth Congress appoints leader Reverend W illiam James, pastor of the St. James Church of God in Christ, Toledo. Ohio, has been ap pointed President of The International Youth Congress of the Church of God in Christ by t h e Presiding Bishop J.O. Patterson of Memphis. Tennessee and the General Board during a Gen eral Session in Chicago. Illi nois. Reverend James attended Clark University in Atlanta. Georgia, and received a B.A. Degree from Eastern Naza rem* College in Wollaston. Massachusetts. He w as awarded an honorary doe torate of Sacred Scriptures by the Pillow of Fire College of York. England in January of 1972 l*reparations are now un derway for the 36th Inter national Youth Congress in M i a m i , Florida, July 2 July 7, 1973. The Congress they sing, in concert, on television, or while record ¡ng. one gets the strong feeling that these people have a most unusual com mitment to God. They feel He is worthy of the absolute best they can give. You will always find them striving for KM) percent perfection. And judging from their record sales and the standing room only concerts around the world, that excellence is ap preciated by millions. The Disciples have ap peared with such [N-rsonali ties as Nickey Cruz, Dave Wilkerson, Pat Boone. Billy Graham. Johnny Cash, and Oral Roberts. They were featured at EX 1*1,0 72. and have appeared on Oral Ro berts specials, and the Johnny C a r s o n T o n ig h t Show. They have been w ritten up in such perio dicals as Life Magazine. Time A Billboard. The cover story of Christian Life Magazine. February, is about Andrae. T heir 1970 recording of "Christian People" on the Liberty label earned them the coveted G ram m y A w a rd nomination. These four LP's on the “Light" label are some of the best selling in all of Gospel Music; and you can't hardly pick up a contem porary Gospel or “Jesus" album without finding at least one Andrae Crouch song. Their album "Soul fully" received t h e 1972 Grammy Award nomination for the best Soul Gospel al bum of the year. The Disciples' music is today's sound. The con temporary rhythm without the distorted raucous effect too often associated with modern music, not only is the musicianship of the Dis ciples of the highest quality, but the attention to the lyrics of every song makes an evening w i t h Andrae Crouch and the Disciples an exciting and rewarding spiri tual and musical experience.
