Annual UNCF National Coro
nation held in Miami, Flori
da.
This is the fourth consecu
tive year that Huston Tillot
son College has received this

Administration.
She is an
active member o f Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority and
the H TC Pre-Alumni Club.
Miss Manning is a member of
the Ebenezer Baptist Church
of Austin.
Miss Henricka G. Manning
was a 1972 winner of a
Huston Tillotson College four
year scholarship. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Manning. 5304 North
dale, Austin. Texas.
Her
sister is Mrs. Jessica Man
ning Fowler.
Miss Manning is a gra
duate of John H. Beagan
High School in Austin.
Selection of winners is
based on the amount of
money raised compared to
the enrollment of each UNCF
college represented. There
were thirty colleges vying
for the title.

Little Rock. Arkansas, first
runner up; Bishop College of
Dallas, Texas, second runner
up; and Rust College of Holly
Spring. Mississippi was third
runner up.

tis Mayfield's song "Freddie's
Dead" received from the
music branch of the Oscar
people. They said not only
would the song not be consi
dered for Oscar nomination,
but that Mayfield's other two
top selling songs, "Super Fly"
and "Pusherman," would not
be considered.
Johnny
Green, a committee member
and composer of "I Cover The
Waterfront,” said "Freddie's
Dead" was ineligible because
it was not a song when it was
used in the movie, that lyrics
were added only when the
"original sound track" album
of "Super Fly" music was
recorded. About the turn
down on the other two songs
nobody said anything, but it
sure shook up Mayfield and
Warner Brothers.

filed against him and Stax
Records by MGM. The suit
claims Hayes, when doing the
"Shaft" music score, signed a
part not to perform or record
songs for anybody else but
MGM for the next seven
years.
The suit charges
Hayes broke the contract two
ays later, and later.
Diana Ross might have
been "The Supreme Sound"
when she was song star of

But, now.
she's a singing and acting
star on her own. with mighty
few equals. The girl's talents
are awesome. After a year or

Gamble, Huff nominated
The songwriting and pro
ducing team of Kenny Gam
ble and I^eon Huff, and its
artists have garnered a total
of four nom inations for
Grammy Awards this year.
Using the talents of Billy
Paul, the O'Jays, and Harold
Melvin and the Blue Notes,
Gamble Huff and its record
label, Philadelphia Interna
tional, were among the few
nominated for more than one
award.
"Me and Mrs. Jones," one
of the best selling singles in
recent years, was nominated
for Best RAB Vocal, by its
artist, Billy Paul; and RAB
Record of the Year.
The
disc, which sold more than
two million copies, is from
the album, "360 Degrees of
Billy Paul," which was re
cently certified gold by the
Record Industry Association
of America.
“If You Don't Know Me
By Now," recorded by Har
old Melvin and the Blue
Notes, was nominated for
the Best RAB Group Vocal.
The single sold over one
million copies, and is from
the album "Harold Melvin
and the Blue Notes,” which
includes the group's next
single, "Be For Real."
“Back Slabbers,” which
brought the O'Javs an even
larger following b / being the
top song of last summer,
was selected in the category
of Best RAB Song. The trio
is currently enjoying success
with "Love Train," one of
the fastest moving tunes on
the market and, like “Back
Slabbers,” certified gold.
