The Medical Record Tech
nology program at Portland
Community College, now in its
fourth year, scored impres
sive results on the national
accreditation tests. The last
graduating class members av
eraged 20 to 24 points above
the national average.
One PCC student, Yvonne
Sarjeant of Barbados scored
142 points on the test out of
a possible 150 points and was
one of two top scorers m the
nation.
Three students in the pro
gram were sponsored by the
World Health Organization and
came to PCC from the West
Indies, They were Joyce Wal
ters, Yvonne Sargeant and
Veronica May.

Repairman vs.
Homeowner
Homeowners with grievances
against repairmen are no novelty.
Bui repairmen too have their
grievances. If a plumber or a
roofer or an electrician suffers an
injury while working on your
premises, you may well be held
responsible in court.
In the lexicon of the law, a re
pairman is classified as a "busi
ness visitor." This means you owe
a high degree of care for his
safely. If he trips on a broken
step or slips on a greasy floor, the

An absent-minded homeowner,
backing his car out of the garage,
knocked the ladder out from un
der a painter working on his
shingles. When the painter filed
suit for damages, the court or
dered the homeowner to pay up.
This was no way, said the court,
to treat a business visitor.
It is also true, of course, that
the repairman himself has duties
with regard to his safety. In par
ticular, he should be alert to the
kind of dangers lhat are common
in his line of work.
A plasterer hired to patch a
kitchen ceiling, had just gotten
started when a chunk of plaster
came crashing down on his head.
He too tried to collect from the
homeowner. But the court said
this was the kind of danger a
plasterer is supposed to foresee
and avoid.
A similar ruling denied dam
ages to a tree surgeon, injured
when a dead limb collapsed be
neath his weight.
A repairman may also be held
to have "assumed the risk" of an
accident if he uses your premises
in an unauthorized manner. For
example
A painter, refinishing a house,
hung his scaffolding from a gut
ter without checking with the
owner While he was at work, the
gutter suddenly pulled away from
the wall, causing him to plunge to
the ground.
But when the painter filed suit
for damages, the court decided
he had no claim. The judge said
that by choosing such an un
orthodox means of suspension, he
had also chosen the risks that
went with it.
