counsel fo r Kirschbaum .

attorney without substantial
hardship to h im se lf o r his
fa m ily , and ordered Judge
Abraham to ajipolnt counsel
fo r him .
Com m enting on the de ci­
sion, Stevie Remington. Exe­
cutive D ire c to r of t ie ACLU,
said:
“ We are hopeful that
th is w ill prove to he a m a jo r
step forw a rd in dealing w ith
tie complex problem of esta ­
blishing state-w ale standards
fo r determ ining whether de­
fendants are indigent, and
the re fore entitled to c o u rt-
appointed counsel. An im a g ­
ing variety of excuses are
used to avoid providing tlie
counsel to r people who are
sim p ly unable to secure a
law yer w ith the resources
available to them .
It is a
dental of equal protection of
the laws to afford one stan­
dard of ju stice fo r tlie poor
and another fo r the affluent,
and means m ust te found to
c o rre c t an indefensible situa­
tion in Uregon.”
