cess. The film was made
in circumstances that would
have, and have in fact, defeated
many other productions, and
upon completion was grabbed
up by Warner Brothers fo r
immediate release.
The
money fo r "Super
F ly” came from 18
black
people who had never in
vested in a f i l m , but did
so this time because they
liked what the scrip t had to
say. Among the 18 were den
tists, financiers, business
men in the black community
tu t also pimps, madams and
drug-dealers. Even so, there
was not enough money and
"Super F ly *’ had to suspend
shooting a couple of times
because there was no raw
film stock to work with.
The produoer, Sig Shore,
had made hundreds of tele
vision program shut not a fea
tu re -le n gth movie; "Super
Fly** was his fir s t. The di
rector,
Gordan Parks, J r ,

grapher Gordan Parks, had
never directed a film . The
author, P h illip Fenty, had-
never written a screenplay.
The female lead, Sheila F ra
zier, had never given a paid
performance
either
in a
play o r a film . Most of
the
technical
crew were
trainees from a Harlem pro
ject which is developing skills
among young blacks.
The film was shot at the
height of winter in locations
which were 50 per cent out
door. The company had to
contend not only with short
age of money, bad weather
and inexperience on the part
of numerous members, but the
crowds that always collect at
a movie in the making. The
worst of these were mobs of
kids who got in the way of
the camera, tripped over the
cables, interfered with acting
and d irecting. Whenobjection
was made, they would reply
that it was th e ir block, and
before long adults would step
into the confusion to defend the
kids. Power fo r lights and
camera was
simply taken
from the nearest light-pole.

pected trumpeters, tenor-sax
man Bud Freeman and jazz
pianist Ralph Sutton, o th e r
members of the group are Gus
Johnson, J r., V ic Dickenson.

around the world, and on
March 19. 1970 they played a
special engagement at the
C u ilm rn .h e e n lv e ve n quarter
White House. President Nixon
had special praise fo r the
group, saying. "The p e rfo r
mance of The World s Great
eat Jazz Band at the White
House on March 19, proved
conclusively that your group
spares no e ffo rt in living up to
its name. As you know, the
Jazz B andwasagreathithere,
and contributed in large mea
sure to the success of the
evening.'

Somehow, "Super F ly " was
finished and edited. A noted
black tunesmith composed a
score. The film was shown
to Warner Bros. That com
pany took "Super F ly " on
the spot, now is interested in
backing more movies by the
rugged group whichpulled to
gether "Super F ly ."
