Stone has been the V ic a r of St.
Philips, for 37 years, all his
m inisterial life.
In 1936, when Father Stone
tegan his career at St. Philips
the assets w eie about $6,000,
in 1971, the assets wete about
$165,000. St. Philips In 1936,
consisted of one contemned
bulkling. In 1971, there were
thiee buildings. In excellent
shape.

He was one of the fountlers of
the Portland Urban League, as

As we go Into this study
again today concerning hones
ty, the purpose Is to make
clear that discussion of sin Is
In order so that we may recog
nize It In ourselves ami moth
ers. Honesty la important to
us as It la probably one of the
moat Important parts of our
lives.
Eet us take medicine fo re x -
ample. As long as there Is
sickness, the re a re many peo
ple that w ill get tired ot w ear-
y If talking about sickness, but
as long as sickness rages in
the human race the talk w ill
continue.
It la just as possible that
some folks get tired of the
church
discussing sin and
h o n e s t y . The preachers,
teachers, philosophers, and
theologians all talk about It.
The parents, pastors, police,
and judges deal with It day af
ter day. We would I Ike to drop
the subject butwecan’ t as long
as people keep doing wrong.
Honesty w ill overcome sin and
sin cannot be Ignored. There
fore we must keep trying to
understand sm but we can only
understand
It If we learn
enough of its nature to diagno
sis It correctly. Can we hope
to find a way and help others
llnd the same cure which God
has provided?
When Jesus declared that
the pure In heart were blessed
because they could see God,
He was saying that the Impute

ence between purity and impu
rity la what the Blblecalls sin.
Therefore, It Is sin which
keeps
people from seeing
God.
Most people instinctively
unlerstand the difference be
tween the physical heart and
the spiritual heart. They knew
that theie Is a dimension to
people, to human personality
which Is beyond weight and
measure and skin color. It
is so dynamic that when we ex
cuse a man’ s fault by saying,
"Oh w ell, he Is of good heart,"
or "he lias a good h eart," we
mean he la good tnwardly.The
hears then Is a chamber of a
personal nature and Is hid by
the Individual him self. The
Bible uses the term "h e a rt”
sometimes for confidence or
affection and often for the real
arel intentional, regardless of

the emphasis or the quality of
character in God’ s sight. It
can lx* found here In the lin
gers, hands, leet. eyes, ears,
tongue which do the bidding of
the heart. When the hand does
wrong, the blame la not placed
on the hand but on tie heart.
So we say the heart Is only a
pump. The pump has no per
sonal view In this m atter. It
is the man him self. I often
times wonder within myself
what new standard of value is
imposed on a common stan
dard for people. "H e that la
faithful In that which is least
Is faithful also In much. He
that Is unjust In the least Is un
just also In much. If therefore
ye have not been faithful In the
unnghteous mammon. who
will commit to your trust the
true riches? And if ye have not
heen faithful In that which Is
another man’ s, who shall give
you that which Is your own?*’

These
are very strong
words In more than one as

Is the contrast which is seen
in all three verses, between
what our Lord called Mam
mon, that Is simply the out
ward look, and the inward
riches of the heart devoted to
and filled with God In C h rist.
But
another striking thing
about these words Is the broad
bold statement that a man’ s
use of the lower goods deter
mine, or Is at least an element
In determining his possession
of the highest manner. In the
old days man had a tendency
to he honest enough that he
didn't look at the color of
a man's skin. A man was
known only by the land from
which he came. At the m a r
riage supper It was essential
that every guest put on an old
garment. A ll of the guest9
dressed Just alike so the rich
couldn’ t look down on the poor
or the poor didn't have to feel
bad being In company of the
rich.
Through this honest state
ment to ourselves we arrive
at the question - What la
truth? Jesus said, ’ ’To thia
end was I born and for this
cause come I unto the world,
that I shall bear witness unto
the truth. Evenyone that Is of
the truth hears my voice.’*

We can see how
change has come to every as
pect and department of our
lives, and the speed of this
change is Increasing all the
tim e.
Transportation is an
example.
Consider the changes in our
thinking, oureducational tech
niques and processes, our
jobs, our communities, of the
way neighbors and strangers
and members of our own
fam ilies act and react toward
us; the increasingly tense con
ditions of all peoples; and how
we and nations act and inter
act. The world has been put
Into a gold-fish bowl and
forced Into one neighborhood;
but It Is fa r from being one
brotherhoud.
