HOW IT STARTED
How did this"com puterized

Well, you can thank, or
blame, it all on an Arm y sur
geon.
L t. Col. John Shaw B illin g s,
who served as a surgeon d u r
ing the C ivil War, suggested to
the U.S. Census Bureau, just
p rio r to the 1880 count, that
various data might be re
corded on a single card o r slip
of paper by punching small
holes on lt. He noted that these
cards might then be assorted

So, fo r you history buffs,
that's how tlie era of the com

FACTS ABOUT THE ARMY
Did you know:
--T h a t the U.S. M ilita ry Aca
demy now has the largest num
ber of cadets in its 166 year
history? More than 4,000ca
dets are studying at West
Point.

and cross-country running.
THE PE O PL E SNIFFER
In past culumns, 1 told you
about the use of dogs in V ie t
nam to sm lf out enemy posi
tions.
W e now have a new inven
tion, a vacuum cleaner-1 ike
device known as tlie "people
s n iffe r."
Two such " s n iffe r s " are
being used by the 3rd Brigade
of the 9th Infantry Division
with great success.The device
scoops up and analyzes a ir
samples. If anyone has been in
tlie area recently, a te ll-ta le
trace of body odor causes a
meter on the machine to flu t
te r.
T he machine, whichdoes not
react to animal odors, w ill
register gases given oft by a
campfire even if it is several
days old. The readings not
onjy pinpoint the enemy’ s lo
cation, tu t also give a rough
estimate of the number of per
sons involved.
QUESTION
F or how long a period does
a person have to e n list to be
guaranteed training in a pa rti
cular field?
Usually fo r three years,
though some programs which
require extensive training call
for a four year enlistment.
