Hughes announces
for Senate
R obert Hughes announced
that he is a candidate for tne
Oregon State Senate from Dis­
t r ic t 8. Running as a (je n e j-
c r a t, he said, " I ’ m trying
to cre a te enough concern to
gain support.” If that can’ t
be done In this com m unity,
he intends to seek that support
fro m the white community.
Hughes is on leave from
The C la rio n Defender, where
he is the "A tion C o lum n ist” ,
to o ig a n ize his campaign.
He is a graduate of Jefferson
High School and has accumu­
lated two yeais of college
c re d it in jou nallsm and psy­
chology fro m PCC, M ultno­
mah J u n io r College, and PSU.
He intends to complete his
education at a more conven­
ient tim e .
Hughes, in addition to his
present employment, was the
f ir s t B lack to w in e fo r the
H ills b o ro A rgus. He is also
contracted to Introm edia as a
model fo r magazine ami IA
co m m e rc ia ls and to KGAR
fo r ra d io com m e rcials. He
mentioned being invited to
Hollywood on several occas­
ions; a case in point was his
appearance on The Dating
Game.
Although having d iv e rs ifie d
ta le n ts, he claim s he is “ a

a voice, because blacks have
never had a voice in c ity a n d
state governm ent.”
