some delays in the checks

The Employment Division

People have asked ma,
“ What do B vitamins do fo r
you anyway?"
So today f l l talk about V ita
min B. Thiamine is part of a
large group of nutrients called
the B vitamin complex. Other
members of this vitamin fam i
ly w ill be discussed from
time to tim e.
One of the most important
things to remember about
Thiamine is that, because it
is a water soluble vitamin it
is not stored in the body.
The supplies in body tissues
are only enough fo r normal
functioning fo r a few days.
F o r this reason it is impor
tant to get enough Thiamine
in your diet every day.
Thiamine is needed to main
tain a normal appetite and
digestive
function.
It is
necessary fo r normal growth
and fo r fe r tility and m ilk pro
duction after giving birth . It
is necessary fo r proper func
tioning o f the nervous system.
People who are low in Thia
mine may experience I r
regular heart beats, nervous
ness, forgetfulness, irra ta -
b ility . They may lose their
appetite and may also ex
perience muscle weakness and
tenderness.
Alcohol is a great thief of
Thiamine, and of most other
B vitam ins also. Much of
the irra ta b ility of a hangover
may be avoided by taking 25
mg of Thiamine before re tir
ing after an “ evening on the
tow n."
Foods ric h in Thiamine,
generally have some or all
of the other B vitam ins, too.
Some of the best sources are
whole grains.
Brown rice,
unprocessed oatmeal, corn
meal, enriched o r unrefined,
wheat germ, whole wheat
flo u r, bread, etc. Another
excellent source is liv e r.
Pork is considerably higher in
Thiamine that other muscle
meats. Some nuts, especially
peanuts, walnuts and pecans
are high in this important
vitam in. Other good sources
are luncheon meat, rod kklney
beans, chickpeas, okra, green
peas, fresh and dried soybeans
and brewer's yeast.
Care must be used in cook
ing as high temperatures can
destroy Thiamine. Do not
overcook vegetables and be
sure to use just enough water
to cook them w ell.
If in
soup o r gravy to avoid wasting
those precious vitamins.
So fo r complete well beir^;
be sure you consume foods
high in Thiamine, this way
you w ill also be eating other
members of the B fam ily,
which w ill be discussed in
later articles.

The Portland Social Securi
ty office downtown has an
nounced today that there is now
a new social security informa
tion number fo r the public to
use, a c c o r d in g to James
Pizza,
manager. The new
number to call is 221-3381.
Pizza also said that those
people who would like to handle
their social security claim s by
phone may now call 221-3410
fo r Teleclaim s Service. This
special service to the public
was initiated e a rlie r this year
to enable those who cannot
come to the office to take care
of their business with a phone
ca ll. A well-trained staff of
workers specializing in hand
ling all types of claim s by
phone w ill usually be able to
handle most claims with one
ca ll. The completed claim s
are then mailed to those ap
plicants to be signed and re
turned with necessary proofs.
This saves a great deal of time
and expense for both die public
and the social security office
and eliminates a long wait to
see someone about filin g a
claim .
The Portland office down
town is located at 1221 S.W.
12th and is open to the public
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
Monday through F rid a y.
