old dolls
D r. Benjamin Spock favors
old-fashioned dolls as the
plaything. And they're good
fo r little boys to play with, too.
D r. Spock w rites in the cur
rent issue of Redbook." it's
not only that dolls can be end
lessly dressed, undressed,
bathed, fed perambulated and
bedded down,” he said. "D o lls
can be used to dramatize all
the human relationships a
child is sensitive to and has a
compulsion to work through. A
boy or g irl playing with a doll
has it break things or wet its
pants or be rude in order to ex
press his own rebelliousness
had hostility. But then he
scolds or spanks the doll as a
way of placating his con
science fo r the naughty im
pulses and as a way of prac
ticing his future role as a par
ent."

and regulations are adequate.
He said "to o often bigotry
and basic racism thwarted our
attempts to help those who are
oppress«!." Commenting on
his leaving the Pentagon, be
saxl, "When I was asked to
leave the Pentagon, I was
pointedly told that I had be
come an adversary to the m il
ita ry services; that I bad be
come a 'champion of the peo
ple' rather than m ilita ry de
partm ents."
Seven black A rm y officers
from F o rt Devens, M ass,
said they "w ant to see a charge
in the institutionalized racism
that has wrapped itse lf around
the m ilita ry system. We sit
before you today because time
is running o u t."
Representative Ralph H.
Metcalf, of Illin o is , told the
bearing that on his v is it to the
Great Lakes Naval Base be
found a "com plete breakdown
in communications". "T h e re
is suspicion of every black
sailor, and the situation is ex
plosive." The Quantico Ma

ported to have "the serious
possibility of violent reactions
to racism of the pan of hlack
