The applause began before
the curtain went up on "C -Jam

Duke E llington's five week
tour of the Soviet Union.
The Russians bought out the
4,200 seat OKTYABRSKAYA

Hundreds jammed the aisles,
whistling, cheering and clap
ping w ildly.
Ellington's program was a
mixture of classic big land

more pieces like "H a rle m

When the program ended, the
clapping didn't stop until after
an hour of encores.
Ellington brought down the
house with an improvised ver

song, "D a rk E ye s".
"Y o u 're ve r y be a u t i f u 1,
you're very sweet, very gen

laughter when he rolled out his
slogan, "1 love you m a d ly," in
Russian.
It was a fittin g opening fo r the
tour which includes stops in
Kiev, Minsk, Rostov-on-Don
and w ill wind up with a four

that the federal government
should set aside a certain per

companies.
The black congressman sug
gested that blacks’ share ol
the government contracts be
increased to >5 billion a year
by 1976. C urrently blacks re

total $ 100 b illio n .
M itchell said the key to this

He said s im ila r goals should
be persued in state and local
contracts and with private in
dustry. He recommended a
minimum of one-third of the
expenditures of citie s go to
hlack companies, especially
in those cities with large black
populations.
