Slow learning and motor retardation Is not un common among ttiese infants, and many researchers he I leve that neurological defects cause the letardatlon. But a psychiatrist at the State University of New York at Buffalo believes that early sensory deprivation may con tribute to—-even cause— the impairments. D r . Morman Solkoff experi mented with two groups of premature Infants, one group was picked up only to be fed or burped and for diaper changes. The second group was fondled for five minutes every hour, day and night, for ten days. I he results? The cuddled prematures cried less than the uncluddled ones; they were more active and regained their birth weight faster. Light months later, their performance was still far superior to the uncuddled prematures. Because of these effects. D r. Solkoff plans more projects w lth"preem les.'* Be w ill use colorful decals and mobiles that the Infants can touch and also play a wide varletv of sounds— those of the babies’ own heaitreats, tlie voices of their mothers, and music from Beethoven to the Beatles. However rich their early environment, thougfi, the pro blem of prem atuie babies Is still unsettling. And one of the suspected causes of pre mature births Is smoking mothers. According to the U,S. Surgeon General’ s latest report, pregnant women who smoke have more stillbirths and spontaneous abortions as well as more premature babies than nonsmokers. Smoking can retard and dam age fetal growth.
