A t last the long awaited moment has arrive,II The Portland Observer has received its moat
valuable possession ....The new press. The beautiful lady arrived at her new home this past Mon
day amid the cheers of the staff. A, Lee Henderson, publislier, was a very proud man as he rolled
up his shirtsleeves to move the press Into its new quarters.
The Portland Observer now has the distinction of being the only Black newspaper on the West
Coast with its own printing fa cilitie s.
This ls not a new story fo r the Observer. The paper was firs t a distant dream fo r Henderson,
a dream which he worked hard to m ike a reality. I he paper h id a humble beginning, occupying
a second story office on A lte rta off of Seventh Avenue. At that tirn ; there were only three employ
ees and the paper itself was a
meagaer eight page tabloid half
the size of a regular newspaper.
This did notdlscourage Hender-
saw a need in the community
which tliey loved and they in
tended to see that need t r i s i .

Now the paper was growing.
It was s till a tabloid publication,
but It boasted of twelve or m are
pages. Tlie staff had now grown
to five. S till something was
missing. Some progress was
being made,
but it was not
enough. Thia little paper had
mat seemingly Insurmountable
odds and yet It survived. It
had survived because it knew
that ther were greater things
for ittoaccom pliah. Planswere
soon being made toward the day
when the little paper would be
come a strong force In the
Albina Community. When the
opportunity presented itself, the
paper was ready. The Observer
being less than a year old, de
cided tliat now was the tim e to
make its move. Negotiations
with the Harbor PUot, a news
paper in Brookings, Oregon,
