Mays Watches
Aaron
ATLANTA—
Wouldn’ t you know It: The
night Hank Aaron hits his 60<Xh
home run, he’ s up-staged by
W illie Mays.
Hammerin’ Hank became
the third man In baseball his
to ry to reach that plateau- the
others are BabeRuth(714)and
oi course, Mays(633)- When
he smashed a two-run homer
high off the left field wall In
the third Inning Tuesday night.
So what does wonderous
W illie do? The Giants out
fie ld e r, who w ill be 40 years
old in Just six more days,
drives In the winning run In
th e 10th Inning
with his
fourth hit of the game to
give San Francisco 4 6-5
victo ry over the Atlanta Bra
ves.
'•They are both great play
e r,” said Charlie Fox. “ They
both give the fans t h e i r
money’ s worth everytime out.
Oddly enough the only per
son In Atlanta Stadium who
didn’ t appear excited about
Aaron’ s 600th homer was
Aaron himself.

“ I really didn’ t think any
thing about It,” Aaron claim
ed. “ The last tim e I can
remember any com motion a-
bout oneofmy home runs was
when I hit my 500th- and that
seems like It was only yester
day.”
Well, not quite. Aaron, now
37 years old and In his 18th
major league season, hit no.
500 here on July 14, 1968 -
and that’ s nearly three years
ago.
No. 600 came o ff Gaylord
P erry and that’ s a feat In
Itse lf since Aaron hadn’ t hit
a homer off the Giants p it
cher since July 16, 1964,
nearly
seven years ago.
“ That doesn’t surprise me.
said Aaron. "H e ’ s. tough.
He’ s as good a pitcher as
there Is in the league. I
Im a g in e a lot of guys
haven’ t hit one off him In 10
years.”
Hank Aaron re a c h e d a
couple of other milestones
Tuesday night. His flrs t-ln n -
lng double tied him, al 542,
with Harry Hellmann fo r 8th
place on the a ll-tim e major
league lis t and the two runs
he scored tied him , at 1,817
for eight place with Eddie
Colllngs.
Also, his three runs batted
In leave him only two shy of
tying Mel Ott for sixth place
In that department at 1,860.
Despite being bothered by
shoulder Injury he sustained
couple of weeks ago while
sliding home, W illie Mays
had a run-scoring double
and then, alter poping o u t,
had three straight singles to
raise his average to .332.
