One o f the p ro b le m s that we, as a c o m m u n ity , a re faced w ith is
the fa c t th a t m any people who should he p u llin g in the same
d ire c tio n a re doing ju s t the opp osite . A few days ago^ m e m b e rs
of a n a tio n a lly a ffilia te d o rg a n iza tio n e xp re sse d d is p le a s u re
o v e r the a c tio n s o f one o f its m e m b e rs . They held a m a jo r
m ee tin g and even. In one sense o r a n o th e r, sought to ce n su re the
m e m b e r f o r his a c tio n .
The b a ttle f o r e q u a lity and ju s tic e th a t is ta k in g place today is
not a p o p u la rity c o n te s t. I t is a re a l s tru g g le th a t in vo lve s the
liv e s o f many m illio n s o f people. We ca n n ot a ffo rd to fo rg e t that
f o r one m in u te . I t doesn’ t r e a lly m a tte r who lik e s w hom , o n ly
th e ir fa ith in an o rg a n iz a tio n .
M a n y of the s o -c a lle d c iv il rig h ts g ro u p s o f a decade ago no
lo n g e r e x is t in fa c t. B ut th e re a re s t i l l g ro u p s th a t have s u rv iv e d
the b a ttle s o f the S ix tie s and have continued to m a in ta in the m em ­
b e rs h ip s th a t f i r s t b ro u g h t them in to n a tio na l p ro m in e n c e . These
a re some o f the gro u p s th a t have been fig h tin g among th e m se lve s
and u n le ss they re a liz e the f u t ilit y of th e ir p re s e n t c o u rs e they
w ill n o t be a b le to la s t the p re se n t decade.
T h e re is need fo r le a d e rs h ip . T h e re a re men who a re capable
