test operation*
From the grim e and sweat
of a ship s engine room to
the knowledge required to de
velop and land a ship on the
moon is one man s way of tak
ing a leap for mankind. Naval
Reservist Senior Chief A via
tion Electronics Technician
Bob Hodge made that leap.
Today,
employed by the
Grumman Aerospacd Corp
oration, Bob Hodge d ire c tly
applies the knowledge lie ob
tained to get transferred from
the engine room of a small
destroyer escort during the
Korean War, to the equipment
that is known tie world over
as LM , tie lunar module.
Hodge is an Assistant Spuce
C ra ft
T^am Manager, re
sponsible fo r test operations
on LM 12 which is being built
at tie Bethpage, NY, plant.
It is with justifiable pride
that Hodge is able to say his
work on LM 7, which was
carried on Apollo 13, earned
fo r Grumman the unofficial
title of builder of the fit st
space rescure ship. A fte r the
explosion in the command ser
vice module of Apollo 13, the
LM was activated and its life -
support and electrica l supply
enabled the three astronauts
to return to earth.

"A ccording to a National Edu
cation Association report last
May, New Jersey is the only
state which hy statute forbids
corporal punishment in
all
schools, public and private. In
about one fourth of the states,
laws expressly allow teachers
to
adm inister
reasonable
corporal punishment and eight
of those states have enacted
such provisions
since 1958
Where there is noclear ruling,
teachers adm inistering physi
cal
punishment in a proper
manner are protected by school
laws or penal codes. A ll states
do have laws prohibiting cruelty
to children, such as whipping.
Fear of the rod as an instrument
of student discipline can
be
traced to the Puritan beginnings
of American education. Then
fear was believed to be the only
force
capable of
in stillin g
proper obedience in pupils. A l
though few would take such a
hard line today, it appears, that
at least in p rin ciple,'spare the
rod, spoil the child* dies hard in

"Im agine being born into a
fam ily in humble circumstances
You grow up, helping to supjwrt
yourself and get a college edu
cation. You work as a bellhop
and in other m inor jobs. You do
very well in your schoolwork
You remain clean in your p e r
sonal life . You m a rry a lovely
g irl and begin to build a fam ily.
You struggle hard until you are
on your way to becoming im
portant in your profession.
You become a distinguished
educator, le ctu re r and social
w orker. You are called upon to
head a very influential organi -
zatlon
dedicated to seeking
meaningful employment and re
spect fo r black people — 1 he
National Urban League.
You initiate creative and bold
program s which result in many
thousands of Jobs fo r
your
people. You have a winning way
with industrial princes
and
lords of industry. You know how
to get into boa rd room s and un
der th e ir skins. You know how
to tell them disagreeable facts
about the life of blacks and about
white discrim ination without
alienating them. You do not wear
dashlkls or scream
angry
slogans
or give fancy hand
shakes or suggest that your peo
ple participate in the h a ri-k a ri
of race violence. You do
a
marvelous job of helping people
and a brave job of weathering
c ritic is m from whites who call
you too m ilita nt and blacks who
call you 'Tom.*
Popes and presidents respect
you. But so do thousands upon
whose tables you have placed a
little better loaf of bread.
One day in N igeria,
there
seeking to help bring about pro
gress fo r people of the world
you get caught up in rushing
waters and you die.
A world stands s till for
a
moment of shock. T hen come the
statements, the telegrams, the
messages. Yourdeath, before
you reached fifty , is
inter -
nationally
headlined.
The
bosses of corporations and out
standing
legislators and just
plain people file past your re
mains in one African and two
United States c itie s . The P re
sident
of the United States
comes personally to
your
funeral and himself delivers the
eulogy. A bugler blows taps to
the sky. An American flag is at
half-m ast many places in the
w orld. And you Whitney Young
J r ., who lived up to every prin
ciple which our society says is
noble, you, the highest apostle of
equality in the land—are buried
in your home town in a J im Crow
Grave.
It is as though, after all you
had accomplished, your country
had said to you, 'You were in
deed a marvelous man. But re
member even you are just an
other nigger.*
T he moment of truth is here.
We must ask the marching bands
to hugh fo r a minute and the
m urm er of pledges of allegiance
to be s till long enough and the
emotion of the salute to flags be
slowed down long enough so that
we can hear the truth the black
man is saying today, the truth
that many black men are think
ing and do not say aloud. They
are thinking along with our late
and ly ric poet Langston Hughes
'A m erica never was America
fo r
me and
yet 1 swear,
Am erica w ill be."
Both the highest and the low
est points above the sea level
in the
United States are in
C alifornia.
