ble diapers have quadrupled to
more than $100 m illio n a year
since we last reported on them
in January 1968. And two of the
three current check-rated dia -
pers w e ie n 't always easy to
come by in those days. The Pam
pers wasn’ t available nationally
then ( it now is) . The Klmbies
wasn’ t even on the market ( it ’ s
now sold in the Rocky Moun
tain states and may go national
in a year or so.) . T h e Chux
name was widely known, but not
foi the check-1 ated model test
ed in this project.
One wonders what — even in
a throwaway-happy society-can
be so appealing about a product
that’ s relatively expensive to be
gin with , is useful fo r only a
b. le f (sometimes very brief)
period, and then is rather hard
to get rid of gracefully.

In conducting labor atory test
our engineers, were p rim a rily
interested in three character
istics: absorption capacity, ab
sorption
speed and resistance
to tearing (as fio m a diaper pin)
A ll 10 of the diapers we test
ed were judged at least adequate
in each respect, although le la t-
ive differences among them are
noted in the Ratings. In gener
al, absorption capacity is
a
function of size. Most diapers
come in three sizes, which have
various names but which usually
are correlated to the weight of
the baby. Some makers offer
expensive - versions. If you
ne e d even more absorbency,
y o u can use tw o at once--
either by slipping one between
the plastic and middle layers
of the other, or by peeling the
plastic layer from one and lay
ing the remaining portion on a
second diaper.
