Editorial comment
Letter to a relative
For weeks now I've been wanting to write an editorial
about the lim its of deficits spending by our government off
icials. You see, I’m still old fashioned enough to want to
balanced budget. B u t, the nationall budget has gone so far
in the red I can’t even imagine the size of the debt any
m ore.
But 1 ran across this letter addressed to Representative
F . Bradford Morse (R-Mass.) which eloquently speaks for
itself:
"D ear Congressman Morse:
“ I hate to tell you my troubles, but I have tried every -
thing else I know. 1 feel that only you can help me now.
"I have a dependent relative staying with me who has
very little fiscal responsibility. He is very good natured
and means well, but he keeps buying presents for my wife
and me, and our two children. He charges these presents
to my account. When he sees something that he thinks we
need he buys it for us.
Many of these things are not needed by us in very few
cases are they exactly what we would have bought if we
had bought these things ourselves. Because he doesn’t work
for a living, money doesn’t mean too much to him and he
tends to buy the first thing he sees and doesn’t shop around
like I would
do if I were purchasing items. He is
also
quite generous
to the poor and needy, but often gives
to
those he doesn’t know who feed him a soft line.
I just received a bill for his last spending spree and
it gives me
a sick hopeless feeling. I keep thinking how
better off I would be if I could just spend that money for
the things I want and could give to the people and the charity
I think are needy. Honestly he does so much of my spend
ing, that I tend to give money to charity anymore.
He won t listen to me, but he will listen to you because
he respects you. Please use your influrence to cut t h e
spending habits of my Uncle Sam.
"Sincerely,
"Jack A. Wilson
"W inchester, M assachusetts.’’
We all have the same relative living with us. He usually
ends up costing us more than any other single dependent...
Every income tax paying season remind us more vividly
just how expensive he’s become.

Thursday afternoon at a hear
ing before the Urban Affairs
Committee, of which 1 am a
member , a large delegation
from the Albina area of Port
land presented testimony con-
cering their inability in many
cases to obtain fire and extend
ed coverage protection on their
homes and businesses. After
listening to their testimony,.,
there seemed to be no doubt
but that inequities do exist—
for people in high—risk locat
ions. THis group had lobbied
all afternoon for HB 1290, but
according to Cornelius Bateson
State Insurance Commissioner
this bill would not actuallyeli-
minate these inequities,
he
said that he is drafting leg
islation to be sponsored by...
Senator Gordon McKay through
the Senate to expand the PAIR
plan (fair access to insurance re
quirements). Testimony further
developed that the FAIR plan ,
which does provide very limit
ed coverage for these highrisk
areas, is almost unknown to
these people who need it. I
would certainly urge any of
you who may need immediate
coverage to contact insurance
companies who are required to
provide this FAIR i n s u r a n c e
coverage.
