brated on the Sscond Sunday in
February.
This has
always
tied in very well with
what
was Negro
H istory and is
now Black
H istory week or
month.
A little boy in school
was
asked by his
teacher, "W hat
is the
m e a n in g
of race
relatio ns?" His reply, "Race
Relations is when you treat peo
ple of other races as if they
were your
K insfolk.”
M ost
of us would hope it would lie

Many years ago when I had
my
fir s t
pastorate
in a
small town in the south,
1
found a young Baptist m inister
in the town who wanted co do
something
about

1 would preach in his church
on the second Sunday in Feb
ruary and he would preach in
my church on the second Sun
day in June. Then I proposed
that we bring a ll the members
of our respective c h u r c h e s
that wanted to come with their
m inister on the days we preach
ed.
He agreed,
but both of
us had to take it up with the
officers of our churches
to
prevent
shock.
Before the
second
Sunday in
Febm ary
1 was informed by him that 1
could come and preach
but,
— so
I
never
preached at
that church.
Then I realized
someone had to be the lead
e r so 1 invited him to my
church in June with as many
people as would come. T h e y
came. 1 gave my older ushers
a rest that day because i found
that they believed that certain

as ushers that day and
they
had a m ixture of colors that
even the tournament of roses
cannot match.
When I served as Chaplain
in the m ilita ry service we real
ly had a problem as to how to
celebrate
race relations day
when the people were already
integrated. 1 could not preach
all
the
other
chapels
on
that day
so how could we
had
race
relations
s p irit.
