When a celebrity calls a news
conference, the a ffa ir is some
thing like the kabuki theater or
perhaps Minnie P earl’ s routines
on Grand Ole Opry - a classic
pattern of questions and re
sponses.
So it was when Joan Crawford
waded Into a hotel suite across
a floor covered with broadcas
te rs ’ cords, those um bllicals

question-asker.
She was in a fur hat and
matching stole, which under the
heat of the TV lights caused her
to comment she’s forevei m ix
ing her seasons with furs in the
summer and bathing suits in the
winter.
She took her place ai a table
under the lights and as soon as
an aluminum can of Pepsi was
placed on the table before her,
the session began.

m orality on stage and screen, a
