In 1968 approximately every eighth o r ninth citizen In the U.S. Am erica was a Negro; ap proxim ately 25 m illio n . In spite of a ll of his contributions to the American culture, he has re m a in e d what Ralph Ellison called him back in 1947 - ’ ’The Invisible Man" - The Ignored citizen. Though he was one of the firs t Americans, and a participant In every stage of Its development, the Negro has been kept out of th e mainstream of Am erica’s life . He has never known what it feels like to be a fu ll fledged citizen In the country which he has bled from , sweated and toiled to help develop. U ntil r e c e n t l y , Americans were ignorant of the contribu tions which the Negro had made and is s t ill making to make the American dream come true. The main cause fo r this lack of k n o w le d g e is the American School system. During the years of slavery it was unlawful to teach a b lc k slave anything. After he (the Negro) had been freed and allowed to go to school, the educational program was deliberately designed to keep him ignorant about him self. This program has not changed substantially until this day. On Columbus' firs t voyage, one of his pilots was said to have been a Negro. Black people became permanent, if involun tary, settlers in Am erica before the Mayflower landed. T h e Negro has fought with d i s t i n c t i o n In every war this country has ever engaged In, and every war fdught on the conti nent before there was a United States. In Viet Nam now a large percentage of the American sol diers are Negroes. Negro inventiveness as well as his labor helped fuel the In dustrial Revolution. To help te ll the story of the black man's contribution to the growth and development of the U.S.A., every church should In clude in Its regular course of studies, abundant inform ation on the American descent. To help you with this program we sug gest miscellaneous resources in Black Studies.
