T X , STRAYHANP Freedom o f choice The story Is told of a man who had falling eyesight and had to have an operation to correct h 1 s sight. The operation was successful but then his memory was a f f e c t e d . The doctors operated again and his memory l m p o r o v e d but his eyesight failed. Finally the puzzled doc tors asked the man what did he choose eyesight or memory. After much hesitation the man replied, ” 1 choose my eyesight because I would rather spend my life looking ahead to the fu ture than to spend It remember ing the past. Choices of life come our way each day. You can refuse to act In the present or plan for the future when tecom e embittered by the past or let m em ories of the past hinder your progress towards the future. If we could have both sure we would like to remem ber and to s e e . However, If there Is a ctw ice of the past or the future why not build a b e t t e r future. We have come over and know what the past has b e e n , we have good and bad m em ories of It, we have good and had experiences to relate, but the future lie s before us. It Is yet untouched, unmolded and unspoiled. You can make of It REV. T.L.STRAYHAND what you choose. The choice Is yours and since we have to en t ir e the consequences of our choices let the choices of the future 1* tetter than the past. B u ild a better life, a better home, a better community, a tetter city, a better world and certainly a tetter character. participating In the benefit. Others were also contacted. Protestant de nominations among black people are known as Baptist, Method i s t , Presbyterian, Episcopal, Congregational, e tc ., but none called Black or Negro. Nor Is there any formally organized sin gle local church, to my k n o w l e d g e , called Negro or Black. Local churches are des ignated F irst, Second, Third, e t c . , or named after biblical c h a r a c t e r s as. St. Jam es, St. P eter, St. Paul, etc., or after great world renowned Christian leaders as Richard Allen, Dan iel Payne, John W esley, James Varlck, Francis Asbury, Isaac Lane, etc., also after local leaders as Gordon, Mason, Wil liam s, Collins, etc. A large number of local churches bear the names of places in the Bible such as Bethel. Mt. Zion, Mt. Sinai, Mt. Nebo, Mt. Carm el, etc. There are hundreds of other names but no "Negro Church" *or "Black Church." The term Black Church or Negro Church, 'however, is a most convenient way to desig nate a segment of the Christian Church according to the tradi tional pattern of forced and Im posed racial segregation, em phasizing the racial rather than the historical or theological background of the denominations to which American people of Af rican descent have traditionally attached them selves as m em bers. The term "Black Church" or "Negro Church," which cuts across and ignores denomina t i o n a l lin es, victoriously em phasizes the fact that we Amer ican black people have a far more basic Christian religion than can be expressed by the term s Baptists, Catholic, P r e s byterian, Episcopal, Methodist, etc., each of which had Europe an rather than African origin s, and theological rather than hu manitarian motivation. "Black Church" Is now, in 1970, far’ m ore than a convenient descrip tion designating a segment of the Christian Church according to the traditional patterns of se g regation. It is a proudly ac c e p t e d explicit sou l-stirrin g title sym bolically describing a determined people who have com e thus far by faith In God and solidarity among them s e lv e s . — o* The a v e r a g e automobile owner pays about $30 a year (60 c e n ts’ a week) In Federal t a x e s to the Highway Trust Fund which provides the Fed eral share of the nation's roadbuilding c o sts.
