T his unusual collection of
w riting was gathered and edited
by author Rosa GUy (B ird At My
Window), who sa y s, " T h e book
grew out of my d e s ire to know
how th e se painful events had a f­
fected the lives and am bitions of
y o u n g Blacks a c ro s s the na­
tio n ."
Miss Guy began looking for
the an sw ers from th e children
of the s ix tie s two y e a rs ago,
asking young B lacks, aged 13 to
25, to w rite and talk about th e ir
lives - th e ir aw aren ess of s e lf,
t h e i r rela tio n sh ip s to o th er
Blacks and to w hite so c ie ty .
S h e tra v e le d throughout the
United S ta te s, going Into Black
high schools and colleges In
urban and r u ra l a r e a s , Into
w r ite r s ’ w orkshops, the cotton
fields and the ghettos.
The re sp o n se s she receiv ed
ranged from those who couldn't
w rite (she Interview ed them ) to
a rtic u la te young Blacks such as
the revolutionary poet, Nikki
Giovanni.

tion.
A "ch ild of longing" h e rs e lf,
Rosa Guy sa y s, " I identify
strongly with the book." Born In
T rinidad, sh e cam e to New York
with h er p a re n ts and s is te r
when sh e was eight. She atten d ­
ed public school In H arlem "not
very lo n g ," and a fte r her s e c ­
ond parent died when she was
13, "you can say I was an o r ­
phan around the s tr e e ts of New
Y o rk ."
