STKAYBAND A little child storxl at the win dow on the 5th floor of the burn ing building. The crowd gath ered below looking up and shouting for the child to jump. REV. T L. S T R A Y H A N D The firemen turned th e ir hoses on the burning building and spread the net for the child to Jump, but the frightened child screamed lo u d e r and stood there afraid to Jump. One of the firemen decided that the only way to save the child was to clim b the ladder and go In and rescue the child. The fireman started up the ladder and the wind swept flames and smoke almost engulfed him. Be wavered as If J A C S v o ic e c a ll fo r concerned Are you concerned about your community? Yes? Then JACS needs YOU.” JACS (Joint Action In Community Service) Is a vol unteer program which attempts to help young men help them selves when they come out of Job Corps training. Many times It is frustrating and defeating for a young person to return to his community after training only to find that Jobs and hous ing are scarce. This Is where you, the JACS volunteer, fit Into the picture. Job Corpsmen need people who are concerned and w illin g to help them In their needs as they re-adjust to their c o m m u n it y . Your aid could mean the difference between success and failure for a young m a n ; It could mean the d if ference between a contributing member of the community o r a detriment to society. If you are concerned alout your communi ty, then JACS DOES need you I F o r more Information on JACS contact: Ken Carlson Assistant JACS Coordinator to The Rev. Sam Johnson (Coordinator) 3017 S.W. The crowd below looked on and th e ir hearts q u a k e d at the thought of the child and the fireman perishing In the flam e. Someone In the crowd said, "L e t us give the fireman a cheer and encourage him .” When the fireman heard the cheers below and knew the crowd was cheering for him to succeed he took new courage, rushed up the ladder, went Into the building and was soon com ing down the ladder with the child. Life fo r most of us could be like that. Heroes are scarce and all of us would not be heroes If we could. Yet, there are those who are trying to clim b the lad der everyday. When we dis courage them they see no rea son to succeed. If you cannot rescue the perishing, you can at least cheer for those who do. If you cannot go to the top you can do so much to help others who are try in g . Rather than to stand and c ritic iz e and look for fa il ure, let us cheer and encourage others to succeed. When we raise our voices of encourage ment together somebody takes new courage and we a ll succeed because the cheers are neces sary to help the team to win. 7V4.S4 Team Putting a good technological team together Is something like assembling a w in n in g football club. There must 1« a good bal ance of experts-englneers, scientists, mathematicians - just as on the gridiron It Is de sirable to have some good run ning, some good passing, a competent defense, etc. If technological aggregations were ranked like college teams, the a ll-tim e No. 1 spot would go to the people at Houston’s Manned S p a c e c r a f t Center. Their accomplishments need no documentation. But now this great team is In danger of being dismantled. The space program Is being de-em - p h a s iz e d . Maybe Instead of going to Europe o r Asia for a v a c a t io n we can go to other planets. With all of the smog It may be better than what you think. It Is strange how men w ill argue with God. He spoke to Moses from the burning bush, telling him He had chosen him to lead Israel out of the Egyp tian bondage. One would expect that Moses would have been w illin g to trust the Lord’s Judg ment wo choose the right man fo r the Job. Does he? I f you w ill turn to chapters three and four of Exodus you w ill find the ans wer. Those two chapters are fille d with the arguments Moses used In an effort to convince God that He had made a m is take. Gideon was guilty of the same kind of attitude. God sent an angel to him with a divine com mission to free the people of Israel from the oppression of the M ldlanltes. Instead of being humbly grateful that God has chosen him fo r such a task and going forth with confidence to accomplish the work which God has selected him to perform , he Is full of mealy mouthed pro testations that his "fa m ily Is poor In Manasseh, and I am the least In my father's house” (Judges 6:15). And look at Jeremiah. Coura geous soul and uncompromising In his loyalty to the Lord In the face of persecution and oppres sion though he was, he, too, when he fir s t heard the voice of God calling him for special s e r vice, argues that he Is not the right man. " I am a ch ild ” (Jeremiah 1:6) he says. What he means is, ” 1 am not big en ough fo r the Job. You had better choose somebody e lse ." How greatly God used these three men. What triumphant plans He had In mind for each, and how fu lly those plans were realized; but firs t He had to overcome th e ir objections as e a c h said In effect when He called him, " I am not the right man. You had better get some body else.” God knows the need, and He always chooses the right man to meet the need. God Is not so much Interested In great talent and a b ility as He is In sim ple obedience. He w ill pro vide the s k ill and the power. He asks the man o r woman whom He selects and calls to provide a yielded heart and a surren dered w ill. W Cfjurrf) of ö o u r «Choice I uiitb your family FIRST A.M.E.
