Ex-Barber Rolls Up $3,000,
000 in Liquor Trade.
WHISKY FLEET IS RUN
Respectable Brokers Give Up
fctock Market to Get Rich
In Bootleggery.
This is the fifth and final article of a
series written by a reporter sent to the
Bahama islands for a first-hand inves
tigation of the liquor smuggling fleet
which operates from Nassau and sup
plies the eastern United States. In a
previous article, Mr. Dolan told of the
(tystera of intimidation employed by the
smugglers of the Bahamas to keep safe
the secrets of the trade.-
BY FRANK DOLAN.
(By Chicago Tribune Leased Wire.)
NEW YORK, Dec. 4. The Indians,
who became violently attached to
the fiery liquid which flowed from
the bottles of the Dutch who landed
in what is now New York, sold the
Island of Manhattan to Peter Min-
uite, the first governor-g-eneral of
the province of New Netherlands,
for 60 guilders, a sum which 4n
those days meant a drunk for the
whole tribe, but which today repre
sents scarcely, the price of a few
diluted beakers.
The transaction might easily be
termed the first piece of liquor prof
iteering in the history of America,
but when compared with the deals
put through today by the up-to-date
Plutocratic bootleggers of Nassau,
New York and Newport, is shrinks
to insignificance.
The- vast fortunes which havte
been made during the past three
years in the illicit liquor traffic
between the Bahmas and the United
States defy the statistician, because
the money is, in many cases, in
vested in foreign securities under
dummy names, a precaution in gen
eral favor among the smugglers.
Negro Owns Whisky Fleet.
But the storiea of drunken smug
glers at the orgies in Nassau hootch
palaces indicate 50 gigantic for-
tunes, even when the stories are j
discounted 1000 per cent. !
A negro, barber, who three years
ago trod the streets of Nassau in
comparative rags, is now owner of
a whisky fleet operating between
Nassau and Florida and his wealth
is computed in seven figures.
I,indseyv the ex-barber, declared
to me he has made at least $3,000,
000. He started with one small boat
which he bought for $300 from a
drunken sponge fisherman.
He got his first whisky, on credit
from the Bahama Islands Import &
Export company of Nassau. He sold
out, bought a bigger boat and grad
ually increased the size of his busi
ness and his fleet until today he is
rated among the most ppulent and
Influential of Nassau smugglers.
Two smooth-faced English youths,
who have lived in Nassau since 1910,
have reaped a bootleg harvest,
which was planted by their father,
John AlcPherson,. who died shortly
after opening a wholesale liquor
etore In Nassau three years ago.
Although only in their early 20s
they are now millionaires. Their
diluted liquor is on sale at pre
vailing prices to almost any Amer
ican city of the eastern states.
The story of Earl Simmons, who
went to Nassau as a United States
vice-consul two years ago from
Gloucester, Mass., is a classic for
young men seeking quick fortunes.
Shortly after his debut In Nassau
Simmons began to frequent the Lu
cerne hotel and the bootleggers
tales of quick wealth weaned him
from Uncle Sam's employ.
When Consul Lorin A. Lathroo
requested Simmons' resignation he I
took a flier in rum smuggling as
super-cargo on a two-masted smug
gling vessel operated by Chrystie
& Co. of Nassau.
But the fortunes made by the men
who sail the ships from the Baha
mas is pin money compared with
the accumulations of the big rum
rings of New York, Philadelphia,
Baltimore and Boston.
Stock Profits Outdone.
Bootleggery is a road to wealth so
much quicker than the stock market
that many erstwhile respectable
brokers . of Wall street have prof
ited to the extent of many millions.
The names of these men and the
stories of their operations are
known to the authorities, but evi
dence is not sufficient to secure con
victions or to warrant publication.
Cases are slowly being built up
in the office of the United States
district attorney which may eventu
ally transplant these operators from
before the bars of the Bahamas to
behind the bars of the federal pris
ons, but in the meantime, the smug
glers hold sway and the rum comes
pouring in.
Governor Hart to Return. -
OLYMPIA. Wash., Dec. 4. (Spe
cial.) Governor Hart today offi
cially notified Acting: Governor
Coyle that he would return to the
state Wednesday. ' Governor Hart
has been in California for the last
month on a vacation.
