I. X. Day, John P. Kavanaugh,
Jay Bmvcnnan Declare They
Had Xo Hand in Matter.
Somewhat of a tempest in demo
cratic circles has been raised by the
appearance of the "citizens' ticket," i
which contains most of the demo- r
cratic legislative ticket and in- I A
dorses Ben. V. Olcott for governor I A
and C. N. McArthur for congress, j Ta
Complaint against the ticket ap- ! K
I'caia lu ue uommeu almost exclu
sively to the close personal friends
and advisors of Walter M. Pierce,
the democratic candidate for gov
ernor. The ticket Is issued by the Ore
Ron Defense League, of which Frank
T. Berry is president. Mr. Berry is
a life-long democrat, who was a
deputy United States marshal under Va
the democratic administration. The
copy of the "citizens" ticket was
brought to the office of The Ore
Ronian by a leadSig democrat, who
is a democratic candidate for office
and who is high in authority in
the democratic party.
C. J. Smith, democratic state
chairman, in a communication to
The Oregonian, says he is reliably
informed that democrats had noth
ing: to do with making up tha
ticket. He says he is also reliably
Informed that the sponsors for it
were L N. Day, John P. Kavanaugh
and Jay Bowerman, and says these
three might admit their sponsor
ship. Statement la Denied.
In most emphatic manner the
statement of Chairman Smith Is de
nied -by Messrs. Day. Kavanaugh
and Bowerman. Chairman Smith's
letter follows:
"My attention having been called to
an article that appeared in The Ore
gonian Thursday morning, regarding a
certain 'Lily White' ticket, which omits
the names of Walter II. Pierce for gov
ernor and Elton Watkins for congress
man, and is supposed to represent dis
sension in the' democratic ranks. I beg
to advise you that I am reliably in
formed democrats had nothing to do
with making up this ticket.
"I. N. Day, John P. Kavanaugh and
Jay Bowerman were the sponsors of the
movement that resulted in the 'Lily
White' ticket, I am reliably informed.
Indeed, I have- no doubt that those gen
tlemen, if questioned, would admit their
ponsorship of the ticket.
Dissension Not Indicated.
"An examination of the ticket shows
that it endorses only those candidates for
office who are avowed opponents of the
compulsory school bill. The attitude
of the democratic party organization on
this question is that it is one for the
people by their votes to decide. Many
good democrats, like many good repub
licans, are on both sides of this meas
ure and it is no indication of dissension
in democratic ranks that the names of
some democratic candidates but not the
names of others have appeared on a
ticket obviously drawn in the interest
of defeating this bill.
"I had nothing whatever to do
with the so-called 'citizens' ticket,' "
declared Senator Day. "I neifher
sponsored it nor in any way brougHt.
about its creation. Furthermore, I
am a republican and have never
voted the democratic ticket In my
life, nor am I doing so this time."
"So far as I am concerned," said
Mr. Bowerman, "I never even heard
of the ticket until I saw it printed
in The Oregonian. Those who know
me know that I am a republican. I
have never bolted my party and I
certainly am not going to bolt it
when it is headed by such an able
executive as Ben Olcott, my party's
choice for governor. I am 'regular'
and a 'straight' republican and I
hope that all republicans will sup
port the ticket with loyalty."
"I had no connection with the
ticket, but I know who did," said
Judge Kavanaugh.
.Mr Hedlund last night declared
that he did not sponsor the ticket,
but that he merely furnished for it
names of candidates of his party
who are opposed to the school bill
when he was asked to do so by the
Defense league people. That, he
said, was all the part ha took in the
matter.
Support Pledged Fierce.
J. T. Summerville, democratic leg
islative candidate, whose name ap
pears on the citizens' ticket, says
that he "wishes to state that while
I might not agree with Mr. Pierce
and Mr. Watkins on all public ques
tions, I want to assure them, as well
as all my friends, that they (Pierce
and Watkins) are getting my un
divided support in this election."
A blue ticket appeared yesterday
issued from room 548 courthouse
and signed by the Republican club
of Oregon. It is called "true-blue
republicans" and contains all of the
republicans to be voted on in Mult
nomah county, with no mention be
ing made of governor. The repub
lican club of Oregon consists chiefly
of Charley Lockwood, who has been
collecting dollars for the club for
years.

To Remove Tallow From Clothing.
IF she is not very careful while
using a candle, some of the tallow
will drip on one's clothing, or on
other articles. To remove this tal
low, pour a little spirits of tur
pentine on a woolen rag. Rub the
tallow with it. Then to remove the
turpentine rub with a clean piece of
the cloth. If that does not remove
it, use a little soap and water.

Lumber Office Robbed.
ASHLAND, Or.. Nov. 2 (Special.)
Using a master key, burglars
forced an entrance to the Ashland
Lumber company's office last night,
making away with $228 in cash and
checks. A punch and hammer were
used in breaking into the safe. No
visible clews were left by the robbers.
