' f Home 'and foreign Work Taken Up at Session of Members- of Oregon Synod? - Reports and plans for -the home and foreign missionary work, of the Preebj'terian church are being con sidered at the fourth annual meet ing of the Woman's Synodical Home and,- Foreign Missionary society of the synod of Oregon, held yesterday and today at the First Fresbyterian church in Portland. Dr. Adelaide Woodard of Fateh- Brarh, India, addressed last 'night's session on the subject of "India. Dr. Woodard is at the head of the rPresby terian memorial,, hospital India, where she took, up the work after leaving an active practice in Seattle. She told of mission work in that country and illustrated her remarks with instances from the hospital. Twenty girls participated in the visualization of a missionary hymn, four foreign countries being repre sented by groups of five. -All wore costumes. Five - American-born Chinese girls from the Portland mission, five negro girls, 'five girls from Rose City Park church repre senting Indians and fiye -.Millard avenue church girls," representing India, were in the group. -f - Mrs. Fletcher Linn, president of the organization, presided at the morning session. Reports were given by officers of the society, in cluding Mrs. H. M. Nisbit, recording secretary; Mrs. A. S. Pattullo, cor responding secretary; Mrs. J. C. Fulton, financial secretary; Miss Hulda Anderson, secretary for Christian Endeavor; Mrs. O. L. Price, secretary for children's work; Mrs. Li. P. Hewitt, secretary for West minster guild; Mrs. L. T: Nelson, . secretary for missionary work; Mrs. J. S. King, secretary for literature; Mrs. P. A. Ten Haaf, secretary for Freedman; Mrs. J. W. Angell, secre tary for associate members," and Mrs. L. K. Moore, secretary for overseas sewing. Messages were given by Presby terial presidents, including ' Mrs. J. E. Akey of Pendleton, Mrs. W. O. Ashby of Portland, Mrs.' Volney Dixon of Medford, reporting for Mrs. W. F. Brown, and Mrs. A. W. Blackburn of Willamette valley. Mrs. C. M. Humphreys, president of the Grand Ronde presbytery, was not present. SCHOOL DISPUTE ENDED "Directors Settle Trouble With Silverton High Students. SILVERTON, Or., Oct. lp.--(Spe-cial.) The disagreement ; between the Silverton school board" and the high school students reached an end at the last board meeting, when the board decided to practically Te-store the former course of study which the students asked for. :' ; One of the big complaints the board had to meet was that when the course of study was changed, removing Spanish, it made it im possible for the juniors of last year j to complete the two years of lan guage needed for college entrance, as many of them had taken Spanish with the idea of taking the second year of Spanish duringtheir- senior year. When Latin was the. only language left them they0, had no way of getting two years of -any one language. The board also gave permission for the purchase of four new type writers which were needed badly. BREAKWATER IS PLANNED State Fish Hatchery ami Bridge at Oakridge Threatened. EUGENE, Or., Oct. 10. (Special.) - Members of the state game and fish commission are expected here tomorrow to accompany members of the Lane county court to Oak ridge, where they will determine the improvements to be made to prevent the overflew from Salmon creek damaging the fish hatchery and bridge at that point. . It will be necessary, say county officials, to build --' a breakwater above the bridge and hatchery to confine the winter flood watery to the old channel. A new channel bas been formed by overflows and the hatchery and bridge are mep aced. WOMAN AUTOIST IS HURT Machines Damaged Badly in Col lision Xear Raymond. RAYMOND, Wash., Oct. rlO. (Special.)- A. Yorgensen. his wife and four chil dren were on their way to South Bend. , Mrs. Yorgensen suffered slight in juries. Everett acknowledged his liability for damages. The potatoes have been J contracted for y California buy ers and will be shipped through Marshfield as soon as dug. Vocational School Opens. CEXTRALIA, Wash., Oct. 10. (Special, i A part-time vocational School was opened in Centralia to day that will enable Centralia boys to learn a trade and work at the same time. The school will be held five days a week and from 8:30 A. M. to 11 A. M. daily. The course offered is largely auto mechanics, but will include allied subjects, me chanical drawing-, applied mathe matics, etc. L. B. Travers, state supervisor of vocational education, is here to assist in getting" the new school started. . MoonsUiners Are Convicted. ; MOXTESAXO, Wash.. Oct. 10. (Special.) J. A. McBride, formerly a deputy sheriff, and Gilbert Grant were found guilty by a superior court jury here Monday- afternoon of manufacturing whisky. The two men were discovered August 23 by W.. A. Hamra . and W. R. Inm5n. deputies in the office of Sheriff Gib son, in the act of operating a large liquor still in the deep woods near Damon Point in the western part of the : county. They have since been in the county jail here. Chinook TaKen in Curry County. MARSHFIELD, Or., Oct. 10. (Spe cial.) Chinook salmon are being- taken in Sixes and Elk rivers. shipped to Coquille through Bandon on the Coquille river, there icedeand forwarded to Reedsport for repack ing for the eastern market. The run in the two Curry county rivers said to be the best in several years and the transportation facil ities put them in Coquille six or seven hours after the fish are taken, thus assuring their being in good condition.
