THE MOKNIXG OREGONIAX. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1923
SELL OREGON, IS ADVICE
ADVERTISING EXPERT AD
DRESSES IiCXCIIEON'.
Thomas Iu Emory Tells Portland
to Emulate Example Set
by California.
That there is no more real live
advertising possibility than the
proper selling of Oregon was the
declaration of Thomas Ij. Emory, ex
Portlander and now Pacific coast
manager of the bureau of advertis
ing for the American Newspaper
Publishers' association, in an ad
dress at the luncheon of the Ad
club at the Benson hotel yesterday
.noon.
"It is high time that Oregon's
business men began to use a few
colorful adjectives in speaking of
their communities," he said. "Refer
to the glorious, unexcelled Colum
bia River highway, the green-clad,
heavily timbered hills that sur
round the most beautiful city In tne
world Portland. Your drinking
water; you can use a number of ad
jectives in talking about that."
Mr. Emory told of the booster
spirit which seemed to animate the
people of California and declared
that the Oregonians could well use
the same tactics in pushing the
state to the front.
"When you are away from Port
land, don't simply say you are from-j
Portland, Or., or Salem, Or., or some
other town in the state," he .said.
"Do as the Califorians do. Tou are
from the glorious, sun-kissed, God
blessed state of Oregon."
Mr. Emory also declared that this
state must compete with the $10,
1)00.000 annual commercial and com
munity advertising of California.

1321, leaving an estate'. valued at
$30,115, yesterday filed a petition in
