FRENCH BEATEN, 4 AND 3
Finals of Tourney at Pittsburg Is
Desperate 3 6-Hole Battle.
Gallery Ordains Victor.
OAKMOXT COUNTRY CLUB,
Pittsburg, Aug. 18. (By the Asso
ciated Press.) - Four years agro a
17-year-old caddy named Eugene
b'arazen sat under a tree on a golf
course at Rye, N. T., and told him
self in a day dream that hex was
going to become king of all Amer
ican professionals. That dream came
true today on the hill-capped and
trench-scarred course at Oakmont.
The same Gene, already open cham
pion of the United States, captured
the final round of the national pro
fessional tournament from Emmett
French of Youngstown. Ohio, four
up and three to play, in a desperate
36-hole struggle that was nip-and-tuck
through the turn of the after
noon round.
Both players showed the effects
of nervous tension throughout the
match Neither took spectacular
chances.
TonnKKter Is Acclaimed.
'When Gene halved the 33d hole in
four a record-breaking gallery
swept onto the green and the
youngster quickly was hoisted to
the shoulders of friends. French
was not forgotten. He, too was car
ried to the ISth noie. where victor
and runner-up received the fruits of
triumph. To Gene went the big sil
ver cup, which will remain for a
year at the Highland Country club
of Pittsburg, where he is the pro
fessional. A diamond-studded medal
and a check for $500 alsowere pre
sented to the champion by W. C.
Fownes Jr. of Pittsburg on behalf
of the tournament committee.
A gold medal and $250 were given
to French. The 'big. good-natured
star from Youngstown pocketed his
prizes, gave Gene a rousing slap on
the back and trudged to the club
house. The crowd understood.
French gave Sarazen a mighty bat
tle, but Gene refused to crack under
the strain.

Australasians Now Need But One
More "Win to Reach Play
With V. S. Team.
PHILADELPHIA. Aug. 18.
Australia Davis' cup tennis team to
night stands within one match of
the challenge round and the right to
play the United States trophy de
fenders. On the courts of the Ger
mantown Cricket club this after
noon Gerald L. Patterson and Pat
rick O'Hara Wood defeated Manuel
Alonzo and Count Manuel de Go
mar, the Spanish representatives, in
the doubles match in straight sets
by scores of 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
While the play was closer than
the score would appear to indicate,
the Australians always dominated
the contest and seldom failed to
come through with the winning
stroke when a point was actually
necessary. Both Alonzo and De
Gomar were fast afoot and with
racquet, but even when close to the
corded barrier they hit overhead
shots that were repeatedly hurled
back by one or the other of the
Australians. Patterson was the
best of the quartet in this form of
play.
Tomorrow Patterson will play
Alonzo. and O'Hara Wood will meet
Count de Gomar in singles, and. to
reach' the challenge round the Span
ish players must win both matches,
a feat considered improbable by ten
nis experts here.

By an exhibition of sheer steadi- J
ness. the youthful Californian de
feated in straight sets Mrs. May
Sutton Bundy of Los Angeles, the
only American to -win the British
women's title at Wimbledon and -an
ex-American national champion.
She won the American title nearly
two decades ago, when only a year
older than Miss Wills Is now. The
score was 6-4, 6-3. The conqueror
of Mrs. Bundy tomorrow will accost
the supreme test of her mounting
ambition Mrs. Molla B. Mallory of i
New York, who has sat on the na
tional throne for years. Mrs. Mal
lory toyed today with Miss' Leslie
Bancroft of West Newton, Mass.,
defeating her 6-0. 6-4.
This victory was an unexpected
one for Miss Wills. When the tour
nament opened she was conceded a
chance to defeat Mrs. Marion Z.
Jessup of Wilmington, Del., but her
sister Californian, it was antici
pated, would block the young star's
hopes. Her defeat of Mrs. Bundy
today was a sensation to followers
of the game, for Mrs. Bundy has
been recognized this season as Mrs.
Mallory's closest rival.
