outcome varied from 214c off to 1214c
3ain.
Weakness In; the wheat market was
most apparent during the last 30 min
utes of trading, but a downward ten
dency of values had been shown from
the start. The fact that Liverpool quo
tations failed to reflect yesterday's ad
vance here counted against the bulls, and
so likewise did slowness of export de
mand. Bids for wheat to be exported by
way of the Gulf of Mexico were so un
attractive as to make it more profitable
for Illinois points to forward wheat to
Chicago, a circumstance which seemed
likely to cause a material increase of the
movement to this market. Primary re
ceipts of wheat .were again in excess of
last year, and arrivals from the new
spring crop were reported as gradually
becoming larger..
Moreover, harvesting In the northern
portion of the apring crop belt was said
to be making excellent progress, with
yields generally good. It was officially
estimated that the Canadian crop would
be about 20,000,000 bushels larger than
iast year, but on the other hand the
estimate was 2O.O14O.OOO bushels more
than theArade had expected.
Corn and oats reflected the action of
wheat. Dealings were almost entirety
!oca 1.
Provisions averaged higher, with hogs,
and as a result of some export buying
of meats.

The Chicago grain letter received yes
terday by the Overbeck & Cooke com

Wheat All deliveries sold at a new

waT some bullish news in evidence early
with the Canadian crop estimate of 820.
000,000 bushels about 20.000.000 bushels
less than the trade expected, although it
compared with 300,000.000 bushels har
vested last year. .
Those whd bought early went out of
their holdings later and the undertone
waa heavy toward the last. However,
we note some change In sentiment
among traders who have been very bear
ish of late, and feel that It would not
be good policy to take the selling side on
the declines from the present level, as
any change In the character of the news
might cause a covering movement. Ex
port demand slow, due partly to a great
delay in cables. The movement prom
ises to be greatly curtailed, as the out
look for a settlement of the rail strike
is less promising and the labor troubles
are .increasing. Minneapolis reported
122 cars of new wheat there today.

BT ALEXANDER DANA NOTES.
(By Chicago Tribune Leased Wire.)
NEW YORK, Aug. 11. All financial
markets opened and closed today with
out knowledge of what decision had been
reached at the conference of railway
managers. That( the . president's plan
for submitting te the railway labor
board the status of returning strikers
would in some form be accepted,
the predominant. belief.
The stock market displayed a good
deal ot passive strength. But the rail
way, shares hardly changed at all In
price, and the advances which occurred
in a few industrial stocks were merely
speculative movements following the
line of least resistance.
The essential fact was the total ab
sence of such pressure of sales as might-
logically havewcome with apprehension
of complications and disagreements
which would Indefinitely prolong the ex
isting situation. But this has been the
characteristic phenomenon of the mar
kets ever since the labor controversy
reached its crisis. If it was deemed par
ticularly significant today, that was be
cause the overnight news of the break
ing away from discipline by western
trainmen at various points, without
orders from the union, had seemed to
provide material for fresh ureasinesa. It
did not appear to have had any such
reault. .
For the day at any rate, financial
Judgment evidently rested on the con
siderations that the labor deadlock must
be regarded as a whole;' that it is
clearly in the interest of all parties to
terminste it; that the struggle in the
coal trade is in manifest course of set
tlement, and that the rest must logically
follow.
The day's firmness in the stock mar
ket was supplemented by a distinct re
covery in European exchange, led by the
rate on Paris, which reached the highest. J
figure since Tuesday. This was a nt-JS
ural result ol the caoiea news mat me
French and English conferees at Lon
don were still seeking ground for united
action. The German mark did not re
cover. "
