By tak ng the second game of
their double matinee with Seattle
yesterday the Beavers broke even
on the day's work. The Suds man
handled Ralph Coleman in the first
contest for ten hits and took the
opener, 7 to 2. The Beavers re
versed the order in the second con
gest and, oy giving George Walberg,
t,he kid ritcher of the Portland
crew, some fine support, won 5 to 3.
The outcome of yesterdiy's games
gives Seattle the lead on the series,
four to three, but with a postponed
game of a previous ser.es to be
played off today; the Beavers have a
chance to even up the count for the
week.
Beavers Hits Scattered.
The Beavers got their share of hits
in the first, game, tallying a total of
eight off Jacobs, which was but two
less than it took tor Seattle to win,
but they did not come when they
were needed. One of Portland's two
runs came in ins lourth inning on
Dick Co::'s three-base blow and
Jimmy Poole's single. Charley High's
home run in tne- ninth gave the
home team its other run.
Coleman was no puzzle to the Se
attle batters from the start. They
found him for three hits .n the first
inning which netted three runs.
From then on the Suds kept well in
front.
It looked as if Seattle would clean
up in the double-header wnen Lane's
homer in the first inning gave the
visitors a lead at the start of the
second game, but Portland took a
new lease on life in he second
frame, when three hits sent two
runs across and put the Beavers one
run to the good.
Giessett Is Passed.
In this inning McCann, the first
man up, drew a walk. S'.rgent sin
gled, McCann going to second on the
hit. King forced McCann at third
and was forced out at second him
self by Walberg. With Sargent on
third Finr.eran did not take a chance
on Gressett, but issued a free pass
to the Beaver left-fielder. Wolfer's
single to left scored Sargent.
With Dick Cox up and two run
ners on the paths it looked as if
Portland would sew up the old ball
game right there but the best Cox
could do was to bring Wolfer in, for
Gressett was caught trying to score
on the same hit.
Seattle tied the count again in its
half of the third when Lane, who
doubled to left scored on Hood's
single. The Beavers could not be
held in leash for long. In the next
inning Charley High's second home
run of the day put Portland back in
front.
Hood Gets Homer.
The Seattle club, however, also has
home run. hitters as Walberg found
out to his sorrow. In the sixth in
ning Hood lifted one of the big
southpaw's slants over the right
field fence. It put the score on a
50-50 basis again but only for a
short time for the Beavers counted
again in their half of the same
inning.
Big Rip King grew careless and
stepped in front of one of Joe Fin
neran's wild heaves. He advanced
on Walberg's single and scored on
another safe hit by Wolfer.
The Beavers figured that the one.
run lead was not enough so in the
eighth they proceeded to nick Mr.
Finneran for another tally. Gres
sett and Wolfer hit safely and the
former scored on Cox's sacrifice fly.
Today's game will start at 2:45
o'clock.
