A joy ride to Seaside in a stolen automobile ended at the state training- school In Salem for three young . boys yesterday. The boys, Ralph Cole, aged 16, Eddie Ronders, 17, and Carl Londsberg, 16, were com mitted by Judge Kanzler of the court of domestic relations, after they acknowledged that they had stolen a motor car belonging to Rev. Levi Johnson, superintendent of the Men's Resort. Another boy, Robert Stevens, 19, was bound over to the grand jury. Cole and Stevens were the only ones to take the ac tual ride to the resort, the other boys becoming frightened. Noted Realtor to Speak. W. B. Herron,- past president of the Iowa State Real Estate association and field organizer of the National As sociation of Real Estate Boards, will be the speaker at a special luncheon of the Portland Realty board at the Multnomah hotel to day at 12:15, Mr. Herron will bring a personal message from President TJpham as well as having many Important suggestions to make rel ative to the conduot of board mat ters. New officers of the Northwest Real Estate association will be pres ent and will be introduced. Episcopal Folders Issued. Five thousand folders containing maps andsreneral information of interest to delegates to the general conven tion of the Episcopal church, are being mailed out of the diocesan office to ail parts of the country. The convention will meet here Sep tember 5-23. Half of the folder, which contains 16 pages, is devoted to maps of the business sections of the city, both on the east and west sides of the river. The other por tion is given over to information and instructions of general interest to visiting churchmen. Repair Work to Start. Work of repairing the damage done to the new Bull Run dam of the city water system by the high water of 'a few eeka ago will be. started tomorrow, according to City Commissioner Mann. The excess of water which poured over the dam washed away the earth beneath the concrete base of the lower side of the structure. The hole thus created roughly ap proimates 100 feet in length and 50 feet in width, and is as much as eight feet deep in places. MOst of this will be filled with concrete, at a cost of from $2500 to ,3060. Gift Made to Professor. The last assembly of the Portland sum mer term of the University of Ore gon was held yesterday, and at this time the 500 students and faculty of the summer term assembled to bid farewell to Ir. George Rebec, di rector of the Portland Center, who is leaving for a year's travel and study in Europe August 1. The stu dents presented him with a hand ome suitcas and other gifts as marks of affection and esteem. Weekend Services Announced. All, are welcome. Stadter Takes Oath as Judge. F. W. Stadter yesterday took. the oath of office preparatory to serv ing as municipal judge during the annual vacation of Judge Ekwall. Where Is Clifford Orrell? Clifford Orrell of Nebraska, Ind., has not been heard from in more than a year by his parents in that city. Since that time a sister, Mrs. Zona Woods of Indianapolis, and a brother, C. E. Orrell of Kelso, Wash., have died, and Mr. Orrell's ' parents wish to get word to their son. Mr. Orrell, when ,last heard from, was working "in a logging camp in this etate. Additions Made to Parking Zone. Small additions to the two-hour parking zone iiave been made by the city council through passage of an J5mergency ordinance. The added 'spaces are west side of Park street, from the north line of Glisan to the south line of Hoyt street, and on Glisan street, from the east side of Third to the west side of Teith street. Registration Books Are Being Checked. A check on the registra tion books of Multnomah county was begun yesterday by a half- dozen clerks under the direction of F. M. DeNeffe, who is associated with Jay Bowerman, - attorney for Governor Olcott in the gubernatorial election contest. Patriotic Exercises at Vernon Park. Under direction of city play ground directors there will be a flag-raising and patriotic exercises at Vernon," park playground at 11 o'clock this morning. Miss Dorothy KcKee and Maurice Howard of the playground . division will be in charge. Matricide Taken to Insanb Hos pital. Walter Weir, who murdered his aged mother about two months ago, was taken to the state hospital for the insane at Salem yesterday. An- attendant was summoned from - the institution to take charge .of Weir on the trip. He had been vio lent during the past few days. Janet Chapin is Convalescing. Janet Chapin, daughter of H. F. Chapin of Portland, who suffered fracture of the skull in an accident at Cannon Bea,ch July 4 and was op erated on at Astoria, is convalescing rapidly, according to word received by Portland relatives and friends. Reports of an unusual amount of poisoning from poison oak growing about the city have influenced City Health Officer Par rish to take action at once to see that this menace is eradicated. Dr Parrish announced yesterday that wherever the poison oak is found the lot. owner will be given ten days in which to remeve it. Fail ure to act will bring arrest and prosecution. Inspectors and mem bers of the lot-cleaning staff are notifying the health bureau of loca tions of all poison oak found in the course of their work. Cement Contractor Arrested. Charles Soloman, a cement con tractor, living at 4603 Sixty-fourth street Southeast, was arrasted yes terday by Police Detectives Persln ger and Wescott on a charge of is suing worthless checks. The com plaint was signed by W. R. Duggan, a teamster in the employ of Solo man. The prisoner told the police he had arranged for a $2000 credit with the Citizens bank, but that this NATIVE OF DENMARK DIES AT PORTLAND HOME. - Andrew P. Gram. Andrew P. Gram died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock at his home at 362 Larrabee street. He was .born at Vejen, Denmark, May 12, 1855. He came to this country in 1880. In 1884 he married Miss Carrie Jensen, and the couple came to Portland in 1904. He is survived by his widow, a sister, Mrs. H. Sooguajd of Omaha, four daughters, Mrs. H. S. Rudd and Miss Alice of 'Portland, Mrs. Betty Gram Swing of New York city and Miss Mabel of Washing ton, D. C., and three- sons, Fred P. and Harland B. of Portland and Arthur J. of Chicago. New Clubhouse Contemplated.- A membership drive of three months' duration was started this week by the Portland Motor Boat club which contemplates anew clubhouse to be. built on the plot of land on Hard Tack Island in the Willamette river near Ross island, now owned by the organization. Discussion of the pre posed new building at the last ses sion of the club caused the members to postpone the work until a larger membership roll was made certain. A. E. Clark to Address City Club. A. E. Clark, Portland attorney, who has made three trips to Eu rope to adjust war claims and take care of other matters, will give an address on America's foreign policy at the luncheon of the City club at the Benson hotel today noon. J. A. Churchill, state superintendent of public instruction will give an ad dress on "Are Tour Children Being Educated V "' Man Is Reported Missing. Mrs. Molly Cole, 1054 Macadam street, yesterday asked the police to search for her husband, C. D. Cole, who has been missing for the past week. He had been drinking heavily just prior to his disappearance, she said. Cole was described as being 35 years old and weighing 17-5 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and was wearing a blue coat, gray trousers and a gray felt hat. Moonlight Trip Planned. Mem bers of the Women's Ad club are making active preparations ' for a moonlight trip on the Willamette which . will be taken on the Swan on the night of August 2. Bessie Colwell, president of the organiza tion, has appointed committees to have charge of the arrangements for the event. The evening will be de voted to music and dancing. Parkrose to Hear Radio Concert. The entertainment committee of the Parkrose Community club has arranged a radio concert for the members of the organization to be held in the club house tonight. A suit Involving a large plot of ground in the state of Vera Cruz, Mexico, was Instituted in circuit court yesterday by R. C. Miller against Ellsworth Pickell and about 50 others. The land is located near the town of Glenwood Colony. Ac cording to those familiar with the case', Miller entered into a contract with G. Evert Baker and others of this city, to a parcel out of the land in . five-acre tracts. These trticts were sold to a number of residents here, and a company known as the Tehauntepec Plantation company was organized to cultivate the land on a proportion basis. The company is also named as a defendant in the suit brought by Miller.. The deal was made about two years ago. In the suit Miller charges that, the contract was broken by Pickell, and he asks that the contract be set aside by the court. Property Destruction Enjoined. A temporary restraining order prohibiting the city from destroying the gambling paraphernalia seized in a raid In Chinatown Tuesday, was issued yesterday by Circuit Judge Tazwell. Wah Sing, one of the 14 Chinese whose places were raided, filed suit asking for the return of the property, which was 'ordered destroyed by Judge Deich of dis trict court. Wah Sing, in his peti tion, said that all the' property had been conveyed to him by the. 13 others. It was enumerated as being 50 tables, 150 chairs, 60 dropllghts and electrical equipment. Public Garage Site Viewed. City commissioners yesterday viewed the site of the public garage proposed for Northrup street, near Twenty third, against which vigtorous remon-, strance was- made before the coun cil, particularly on behalf of Good Samaritan hospital, ' situated only across the street. The site of a lumber yard proposed by the Lom bard Lumber company for Lombard street, between West Anna and Newell streets, was also visited. Commissioners Bigelow, Barbur and Mann composed the Inspecting party. East ,Tabor Reports Delayed. Reports on the various activities of the East Tabor Improvement asso ciation were not made at the reg ular meeting of the organization held Wednesday night, as had been planned, and' a week's extension of time was given to prepare the re ports by the president, Dr. L. R. Wilson. The special meeting has been called for next Wednesday eve ning at the Hudson school building, when several matters of importance relating to the improvement of the district will be discussed. ' Moonshiner Is Found Guilty. Bramlett Jayn'es was found guilty of violating the prohibition law by a jury in the federal court yester day afternoon. This was a retrial for Jaynes, the jury in the first trial failing to' agree. In the pres ent trial Alan Bynon, assistant United States attorney, had the Jury visit the - premises where Jaynes lived at the time the house 'was raided. Sentence will be passed on the defendant this morning. Masonic Building Progresses. Work on the $50,000 home being constructed by Mount Hood Masonic lodge at the northeast corner of Commercial and Emerson streets, is progressing and it is probable that the building will be ready for oc cupancy on November 1. It is 70x90 feet, with a full basement, and two stories high. The cornerstone was laid June 17. Ex-Montanans to Picnic. Ex-res idents of Montana will gather at Crystal Lake park for their annual picnic tomorrow. The basket lunches will be served at 6:30 o'clock and reminiscences and renewing of ac quaintances will take the place of a regular programme during the eve ning. Work of Church Advances. Con struction work on the new edifice for the ' Moreland Presbyterian church, at East Eighteenth street and Bybee avenue, is progressing rapidly and it Is expected -that the building will be ready for occupancy in November. Plans for the dedica tion are being arranged so that the dedication may be held Thanksgiv ing day if possible. Clothes Are Stolen From Shop. Clothing thieves broke into the cleaning and dye works of -C. W. Merritt, 638 Sandy boulevard, on Wednesday night and stole eight suits of clothes which customers had left there for cleaning and pressing, he reported to the police yesterday. They gained entrance by breaking through a glass on the rear door. Church to Have Outing. Mem bers of the Moreland Presbyterian church and their families and friends, will participate in a picnic and social gathering at Evergreen station as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Can a man- not under oath be held for statements made out of court? This Is the problem ' -which United States Commissioner Prazier is con sidering. Clarence Garrett, who -was a government, witness against Jack Clayton, bootlegger, is charged with perjury by Assistant United States Attorney Maguire -because Garrett told one story to Maguire in the latter's office and another when under oath on the stand. Later Garrett is said to have told a deputy marshal that he wanted to go- back and testify again. John J. Beck man, representing Garrett, main tains that unless his client was un der oath when he talked to Maguire, or when speaking to the deputy marshal!, about testifying again, the government cannot support the per jury charge.
