Chinese lottery games are Just as much un 4er the official police ban as are lie fantan games which were sub jected to wholesale raids Tuesday morning. As a result, Lee Yack, lottery operator at 34 North Second (street, was lodged in jail late Tues day charged with operating a lot tery. Much of the paraphernalia was confiscated. Two white men found in the place also were ar rested and charged with visiting a gambling game. They gave the names f Robert Black and Alvin Tyrrell. The raid was conducted by Patrolmen Meiners, Chamberlain and Chauvin of the morals squad. Scotjts Invite Ad Club. Ad club members have been asked to spend a week-end with the 150 young Amer icans at the Boy Scout summer training camp at Wahtum lake. C. C. Colt, president of the scout organ ization, has extended a special in vitation, and has fixed the date for Saturday, August 12. Trains will leave the union station that morning at 7:15 o'clock- and will reach Eagle creek at 9 o'clock. ' Others who de sire to drive up the highway to Eagle creek may join the hikers'at that point. Dock Traffic Luncheon Topic. H. L. Hudson, general manager of the traffic department of the Port of Portland, and of the commission of public docks, will give an address on Portland's harbor facilities and steamship service at" the luncheon of the Progressive Business Men's club at the Benson hotel today noon. The address will be illustrated with slides. Frederick Greenwood, man aged of the Portland branch of the federal reserve bank, will be chair man of the day. There will be spe cial music. Bull Breaks Dairyman's Neck. Frank Lendolt, a dairyman of Moh ler, Or., 48 years old, is In St. Vin cent's hospital with a broken neck as the result of being gored by an infuriated bull at his home last Sun day. An X-ray. examination revealed the fracture. His condition last night was reported as being critical and attendants hold out slight hope for his recovery. Lendolt was milk ing in his barnyard when the bull rushed him from behind and at tacked him before he could make his escape. City Employes to Hold Picnic. Plans for the annual picnic of city employes, abandoned a few weeks ago when dissension arose over pro posals for the event, have been re suscitated and it was announced yesterday that the picnic will be held Saturday at Crystal Lake park. The affair will be in connec tion with the picnic of Over-the-Top post. No. 81, Veterans of Foreign Wars, set for the same date and place. There are approximately 30&0 city employes; entitled to take in the pleasures of the event. Electric Line Authorized. A re vocable permit was granted the Skamania Electric Light & Power company by the county commission ers, yesterday, to place, replace and maintain an electric line along the Columbia river highway from the eastern, boundary of Multnomah county to Ellahurst. The line must be maintained under the supervision of the county commissioners. . The permit granted the company was not a franchise. Rehearing on Claim Sought. On the allegation that' all the facts were not presented before, Henry Starkel, employe of the city water department, has filed petition for reconsideration of his claim for back pay. Starkel was injured on April 25 while lifting a heavy pipe and asserts that he is still incapaci tated. His original claim for- pay during the period of incapacity was rejected by the city council on June 14. Police Pension Fund Complicated; Paul L. Woolston, an actuary, has been engaged by the city council to analyze and make a report on the ponce bureau pension fund. Eecent developments have called attention to the fact that this fund is fast be coming incolvent and attempt will be made to devise means of main tabling the fund in proper shape for the future. . Hardware Contract Awarded. The county commissioners yeeterday signed a contract with the F. K. Chown Hardware company for the installation of all finishing hard ware in the county hospital, at a price of $6369.20. The work must be completed within 120 days from July 12. Radio Concert Announced. Mem bers of the Parkrose Community club will be entertained with a radio concert at the club house tomorrow night from 8 to 10 o'clock. The .pub lic has been invited to "listen in." A special radio receiving set is being installed to insure a perfect concert for all'who attend. Rooming House Permits Revoked. Licenses of two rooming house operators were revoked yesterday by the city council by the passing of required ordinances. The licenses revoked were those-of Mrs. M. C Burns, 462 Glisan street, and Wal ter Peterson, 102 North Sixth street. Montana Society to Hold Picnic. The Montana society will hold its annual basket picnic at Crystal Lake park next Saturday. Lunch will be served at 6:30 P. M. All members or tne society and other ex-residents of Montana have been invited. Mitelene Fraker Stites to Sing. A number of recent changes among the Franciscan Fathers of the Santa Barbara province of the Catholic church, which Includes Oregon, have I recently been announced. Fathe. Urban, formerly assistant in Ascen- sion parish in Portland, will go to i Oakland, where he has been selected ' as guardian of the njonastery, and Father Anthony, who has recently I been in charge of Tigard, will also go to the Franciscan monastery at Oakland, where he will act as mas ter of novices. Father Henry, re cently of Cowlitz, Wash., will be assistant at Ascension parish in place of Father Urban. Father Joachim of Los Angeles will go to Cowlitz to replace him. Forest Road Work Progresses. F. H. Brundage. forest supervisor. has returned from Crater and Fre- j mont national forests, where he has been assisting in road construction j for the forest service. This is found necessary in case of forest fire, emergencies, for rapid and cer tain movement of supplies and fighting equipment. Tractors and graders are being used extensively to Jonstruct rough dirt roads, nar row, used mainly by wagons ' and pack trains. Many Predatory Animals Killed. Effective work was done by the men in the employ of the United States bureau of biological survey in June. Forty-nine bobcats, 302 coyotes, 98 badgers, 156 porcupines and 14 skunks were destroyed by the workers. The average was 14 predatory animals per man per 30 days. This is the same average which has been maintained through out the fiscal year. One man, O. E. Knottingham of Malheur county. made the record average for the year, destroying an average of 24 animals each month, considered quite a feat. He was the one man who worked full time for the year. Sellwood Club on Vacation. Members of the Sellwood Board of Trade and Community club will not meet in regular session during Aug use, according to action taken at a recent meeting of the organization. Plans for the first big meeting after the vacation period are already be ing formulated by the committee, and an elaborate musical pro gramme is' being arranged. The meeting will take place September 5 in the community club building in Sellwood. Over 3-50O at Woodmen Picnic. More than 3500 persons paid admis sions to the annual picnic and social gathering of the members of Mult nomah camp, No. 77, Woodmen of the World, held In Crystal Lake park at Mllwaukie last Sunday. ,The proceeds for the concessions and ad missions were turned into the re lief benefit fund of the order and netted more than $1000 for the pur pose. . The affair was pronounced one of the best that has ever been held by the order. Engineer to Be Chosen. The final selection of an engineer for the new Parkrose water district will be made at an official meeting of the board of commissioners, to be held tomorrow night. -A survey of the proposed new district, with es timates of expenditures necessary for the installation of the water system, has been held up pending the choice of an engineer. New. de velopments recently have caused the board to postpone the selection on several occasions. Execution Stay Granted. Be cause F. J. Kemke of Klamath Falls has a job awaiting him in hi home town, a stay of execution for 90 days was granted him in the United States court yesterday, in order' to give him time to earn 100 with which to pay a 'fine. -Keroke was convicted three months ago of sell ing liquor to Indians and sentenced to 90 days in jail and fined J100. As he is about to complete the jail term, he will be released and al lowed to go to work. Welfare League Wants Members. A special campaign for new mem bers will be started soon by the Irvington Park Welfare league, ac cording to the officers of the organ ization, beveral new members have been added since the organization was 'completed a few weeks ago, and the desire to expand in the dis trict has prompted the idea of start ing a campaign to list as many of the residents as possible in the membership of the league. Veteran's to Hold Street Dance. A monstrous street dance is to be staged by the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Sixth street, between Stark and Oak streets, tomorrow evening. trom until 10 o'clock. A large military, band will furnish music. The military Order of the Cootie will be out in full force, bedecked with their 'red caps, to put on stunts. The dance is given to advertise the picnic to be given by .the veterans at Crystal Lake park on Saturday. Jackson Club Postpones Meeting. There will be no meeting of the Jackson club tonight in the central library, according to officials of the organization, but the meeting will be held Saturday night afc 8 o'clock in the big hall of the library. The fact that the compulsory educa tional bill is to come before the democrats for action and prob'ably will bring out a larger crowd than usual, made the small hall inadeT quate for the meeting. Woodmen Officer Plans Trip. J. O. Wilson, one of the head man agers of the Pacific jurisdiction of the Woodmen of the World and at present the clerk of Multnomah camp, No. 77, the largest camp of the order in the west, will leaVe Saturday for Denver to attend the annual meeting of the boarH of head managers of the fraternal order. Mr. Wilson will Also be an official visi tor at several of the camps in Cali fornia while on his way to Denver. Free, Lecture Tonight. Watts has returned. 807 Morgan bldg. Advi Recall Movement Wanes. HOQUIAM, Wash., July 26. (Spe cial.) The recall movement against the commissioner of finance, Charles F. Hill, appears to be dying a swift death. Official recall petitions were placed on file Friday and were signed by eight persons. Saturday 38 more voters signed. Monday one signature was added. It is be lieved that the decision of Commis sioners Hill and Young, Friday, to appoint Harley B. Fisher as mayor at the next meeting, to '- take the place left by the resignation of W. A. Jackson, virtually has pat an end to the recall, as one of the chief points being made by the re call forces was the alleged refusal of Mr. Hill to consent to the ap pointment of a mayor. BYLAWS TO BE REVISED Red Men of State Will Assemble . Tomorrow In Convention. A revision of the by-laws and other matters of interest to the order will come up or, considera tion at the. annual gathering of the Creek council for Oregon, Improved Order of Red Men, to be held tomor row and Saturday in the East Side Woodmen of the World temple. About 80 delegates, representing the 29 local organizations in the state, will be present at the ses sions, which open at 10 o'clock to morrow morning. . Other features of the gathering will be a public meeting in the municipal auditorium tomorrow night and a dinner. Arrangements for this latter have not yet been completed. Besides other business, the annual election of officers will be held. P. P. Fisher, great sachem, will pre side and make his annual report, which will show a great increase In membership during i the last year. Fifteen past great sachems will be present at the gathering.
