THE MORNING. OREGOXIAN, THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 1922 is SLAV EXILES PLAY 01 STAGE IfJ PARIS Princess Runs Dressmaking Shop and Sews. (-GENERAL NOW PORTER I.anfcrnpt Xobles Torn to Work as Proceeds of Jewels Melt Before High Costs. BT WILLIAM BIRD. (Copyright. 1922, by The Oregonian.) PARIS, April 26. (Special cable.) When there are 20. 000, MO human be- ngs starving along the Volga, the oice of reason asks whether It is iorth whils worrying about the ex impress Zita. And yet it Is easier for r.uman nature three or four thousand .Hiles away to sympathize with the widowed ex-empress than with the peasant millions. Zita Is real to us. tie Russian peasants are only a big round number, an abstraction. And then, heartless as it may seem to say it, there is more pity for the nigh who fall low than with the low i ho simply fall lower. The poor are 'uffering? Well, they are used to St. ;ut when the rich are thrust down we easily picture their distress and sym pathize with it. Zita, they say, is charming and de lightful, while there is nothing either charming or delightful about a mujik, much less millions of mujiks. There fore we send food to the mujiks, but we send sympathy the true charity to Zita. Koblea Take to Work. Paris is full of Zltas, In the shape of Russian nobles, who emigrated After the revolution. They have been existing most of the months from proceeds of their jewelry. But the jewelry Is pretty well gone now and a lot of them have gene to work, j Why shouldn't theyT Let them find out how it feels to earn an honest dollar, say, the cold voice of reason. And yet. there is a gocd deal that Is pathetic about it. Hera Is a princess, for Instance. Three years ago, gentle But demo cratic reader, she would not have seen you or me had we prostrated our selves at her feet. Today ohe has a dressmaking establishment and she would be happy to have you come and .all on her and buy a dress. A real nrincess, mind you, and she would take i lot of trouble to please. She would lake down model after model and try hem on you with her own hands. And you would see that her royal fingers vere roush and harsh from sewing, like any dressmaker's, and you would yity her. Ka-Geaeral la Porter. If yon buy any diamonds In Paris be sure to go to a famous jeweler in the Rue de la Faix. A man In uni form will help you out or your taxi and hold an umbrella over you if it l raining. He Is an ex-general in the Kussian army. He saved some Jewels from the wreck and sold them to this -me jeweler. At last, when he had r o more diamonds to sell, he offered nis services. An American artist who lives In the country has a Russian colonel as gardener and man of all work. An other American has a Russian noble as valet. "He Is really a wonderful valet." said this American. "It Is surprising how well ha knows his Job. Quite ex traordinary. But the poor fellow is Inclined to be morose. I don't know what to do to distract him. The othe: night after dinner he seemed un usually gloomy, so I suggeated that he take the cook to the movies. But .ie didn't seem to care to do It. I nought it would be a pleasant change for him, cheer him up. you know. Strange, eh?" Russians Stair for stage. Henry Russell, the opera Impresario, has discovered musical talent in a number of Russians and is working hard to prepare them for the stage. His prize pupil is Prince Obolensky, whose rich basso may yet restore the shattered fortune of himself, the princess and their five children, now in Parin The prince made his debut the other night at a charity entertainment given by a group of Russians under .r. Russell's direction. In a private theater, lent for the occasion by a member of the old French nobility, the stage was set to represent a Mos cow or St. Petersburg salon of the old days. "An evening at home with the Russian" was announced and the curtain went up disclosing a score of princes, princesses, generals, counts drinking tea and smoking. The "host" requested Count Michael Tolstoy, son of the great novelist, to- play the piano. Prince Slag Gypsy Song:, Then Prince Obolensky sang a plaintive gypsy song and others gath ered round him and joined Jo. the chorus. Madame Spiridowitch, wife of the general, who also was on the stage, contributed a vibrant contralto and later sang solos alternately with fhe prince. It was gypsy music and the Rus sian folk music and the audience was not only thrilled but deeply touched as It realized that these exiles were not, after the first five months, giving a play, but harking back in Imagina tion to other days and other times. In thought and feeling they were again, indeed, "at home," and the audience was forgotten. Yet probably ten years ago they did not sing gypsy songs nor Russian songs at all, but western music French, German, Italian. It is only when Russia is far away that they : have begun to discover her. Rnaalan Danre Given. Another prince, Poutiatin, playei the guitar and another general's wife, Madame Polowtsoff, danced a Russian dance. They may all go back to Russia some day, but certainly not on the same terms as before the war. Nor, probably would they want to. One feels they know Russia better now. At any rate they are helping to make the rest of the world know Russia better, and realize that it Is not a'j one vast dreariness.
