Eastern Markets Affected by Pros
pect of Breaking of Drouth
In Winter Grain Belt. v
The setback given to the eastern wheat
market by profit-taking on the eve of the
holiday took the bullishness out ot the.
local trade, but there was no reduction In
bids at the exchange, . all offers being the
same as Monday, except Red Walla, which
was 2 cents higher put it In line witn
the other grades. small amount of
business was done In the country. The re
cent Inquiries from abroad have not yet
resulted in business.
The Gray-Rosenbaum Grain company's
wire from Chicago said: "After early
advance heavy profit-taking developed, due
to tomorrow's hoiday. Moisture forecasted
for winter wheat belt, which would ma
terially benefit crop, which has undoubt
edly suffered from protracted drouth, al
though we believe that damage already
done is exaggerated and rains would in
crease possibilities of a good setback in
prices. Continue advising extreme caution
pressing long side."
According to eastern advices the Russian
relief will buy about 150.000 tons of"orn
trom gulf ports Thursday.
Goodman's crop report follows: "Reports
from the southwest very discouraging. Big
wheat regions of Texas say no rain in six
months, and crops probably a failure.
Western Oklahoma Is in a similar situa
tion. The western section of Kansas re
ports half the wheat dead and the balance
poor. Central Kansas is without moisture.
I-ortlons of Missouri and western Nebraska
are showing poor. Some complaints from
western Iowa and the Pacific coast dees
not indicate much improvement."
The Liverpool wheat market closed 1&
higher.
All grain exchanges will be closed to
day, Washington's birthday. -

HOLDINGS OF APPLES NOT EXCESSIVE
Storage Stocks Are Much Lighter , Than
Year Ago.
Cold storage holdings of apples In the
United States on February 1 were 8,615.000
boxes and 1,422,000 barrels, or, reduced to
a box basis, a total of 12,911,000 boxes.
This means a decrease of 2,403.000 boxes
from the total supply held a year ago; and
explains the present firmness of the
domestic apple market.. Compared with
,the five-year average of February 1 hold
ings, the supply now shows an Increase of
only 863,000 boxes.

PRUNES SELLING BETTER IN EAST
Market Likely to Be Adjusted Soon to
Values Prevailing on Coast..
A better demand for coast dried fruits is
bnoted in eastern trade advices, and in the
Lrune market particularly It Is likely that
hrices in the east will soon be adjusted to
the higher values prevailing in the
primary markets. A New York trade re
t port says in this connection:
"Quite a little business was booked for
March' and April shipment, but at coast
prices which will require considerable ad
vances here to make a profit when the
goods arrive. Traders believe, however.
that the cheap lines now existing will be
exhausted by the time these prunes arrive
and if the situation as regards supplies on
the coast- is as represented by packers
some good selling months are ahead as
' prunes are the only dried fruit of conse
quence. Apple -stocks are light -and the
miraket is advancing while peaches and
apricots are both too high and scarce to
seriously affect prunes."
RECEIPTS OF EtitiS ARE LIBERAL
Supply ' Cleans Dp Without Change in
Trice.
Receipts of eggs yesterday were liberal,
but the market cleaned up without trou
ble. While the undertone was inclined to
be weak, no material change was made
In buying or selling prices. Bids of 20
cents were made to country shipper and
resales on the street were generally at 25c
to 25 !i cents.
Butter was steady and prices were un
changed. The demand for cubes was about
equal to the supply. i
Poultry and country dressed meats were
firm with moderate receipts.

Stocky of Xearly All Classes Ad
- vance Briskly Steel at High
est Point Since 1920.
NEW YORK, Feb, 21. Trading in bonds
was broad today, but the aggregate
showed no material increase over recent
operations. Keeping pace with the new
high record made i by British exchanges,
the three United Kingdom offerings were
strong and the same reason applied to the
strength of Belgian 6s.
Of the minor domestic rails, Missouri,
Kansas & Texas issues again were most
prominent. Local tractions were severely
depressed, on the drastic cut in physical
valuation recommended to the transit com
mission, but some of the Interborough
series rallied sharply. Liberty bonds were
relatively dull and irregular. Total sales
aggregated $1,727,000.
On a turnover aDDroximating 1.000,000
shares and involving more than the usual
number of standard lEsues, the stock mar
ket today resumed its upward course, many
favorites rising to maximum quotations
for a year or more.
Unexpected ease of money rates and tne
further strength of international credits
were factors in the advance, as was also
the more encouraging outlook In tne Dasic
Industries, notably the steel and iron
trade."
Steel, equipments, motors, oils, rails or
high and low degree, coppers, leathers.
textiles, tobaccos and mail-order 'shares
figured prominently in the movement.
United States Steel made a net gain of
314 points to 94, its highest price since
1920.
Other strong industrials embraced Amer
ican and Baldwin Locomotives, Stude-
baker. American Woolen and American
Ice.
Rails vera featured bv Rock Island
Union Pacific" and Canadian Pacific, the
latter gaining three points.
Exceptions to the general trend included
Mexican Petroleum, Atlantic Gulf, Cru'cible
Steel and National Enameling.
Tomorrow's holiday was without Influ
ence on money offerings, call loans declin
ing from 5 to 414 per cent in the after
noon. More liberal offerings of time funds
were reported, and loans extending into
June were made at 4 per cent.
Demand bills on London established a
new record at a fraction over $4.40, but
allied exchanges, the Belgian rate excepted,
eased. Dutch bills were very strong on
prospects of a government loan by Ameri
can bankers, and all the Scandinavian quo
tations advanced S to 25 points. Exchange
on Canada continued to move more fa
vorably to that center, the ' Montreal rata
falling to the lowest discount in almost
three years.' s

Profit-Taking on Eve of Holiday
Also Is Effective In Turning
Vheat Market Downward.
CHICAGO, Feb. " 21. Although wheat
soared today to a new high price record
for the season, the market declined most
of the time, chiefly on account of a pros
pective break-up of the drouth in the
southwest. Closing Quotations were un
settled lc to lo net lower with May
$1.44 1.45 and July ?1.26 1.26.
Com gained c to lc and oats, finished
unchanged at lie lower. In provisions,
the outcome was the same as yesterday
to a dollar down.
General expectation of rains in Kansas
and other states that for a long while
have been without adequate moisture gave
an advantage from the start to sellers of
wheal About the middle of the session,
however, a leading crop expert gave pub
licity to a comprehensive renprt indicat
ing severe deterioration of the winter crop
in the territory troni Texas to Nebraska,
inclusive. lhls report brought about
temporary rush of buying that lifted the
market to the highest level of the day.
A majority or traders nevertheless pre
ferred to avoid the risk of rain And of
any unforeseen contingencies while .busi
ness was interrupted tomorrow. Late
dealings,-, therefore, were at a material
setback from the top prices reached
Active export call was largely respons
ible for the corn market making a new
high price record for the present crop.
One handler said the amounts he could
sell were limited only by ability to get
the grain loaded. Shipping demand for
oats was relatively slow. ,
Provisions advanced with hogs, but re-
actedlater as a result of selling which
appeared to be lor New York account.
Prior to the increased selling, - lard had
attained the mghest prices this season.
The Chicago Grain letter received yester
day by the Overbeck & Cooke company of
Chicago lollows:
Wheat Started lower on the easier turn
in Liverpool and on the forecast for jnois-
luie 111 t-ci lam Bvbuuna uj. Liie soutnwest.
The market later rallied sharply to a new
high point on the crop followir- the 6ub-
lication of a very bullish summary of crop
conditions by a prominent local authority.
The advance failed to hold and at the
close the market had a reactionary an
pearance. with longs displaying uneasi
ness over the possibility of rains being
received- in me soutnwesc over the noil-
ay. There was very little doing in ex
port circles today and it was thought
mat yesieraay s large sales migntrepre-
sent a temporary culmination. This idea
Is strictly tneoreticai ana nas no founda
tion in fact, although the absence of sup
port would probably result in a further
setback, especially if the southwest gets
moisture over me noiiuays.
Corn Ttns market was strong through
out the session, with buying led by leading
elevator arm smpuintr interests. The re-
lactton toward the dose was entirelv in
sympamy witn wneat ana tnere was no
evidence or any important pressure. Shin.
ping oemana was active again, with sales
of .330,000 bushels. Including 300.000 to
exporters. vvnen tne movement lets up,
as it is almost sure to ao witnin the nex
two weeks, prices wili respond to this
continued buying by the seaboard.
Oats Trade was active, but the mar-
kef was irregular and susceptible to orders
on each side. . A conspicuous feature was
that the market rallied more quickly than
it has of late. We anticipate an un
usually good cash demand and higher
prices In the near future.
, Rye Selling by northwestern interests
proveu too large jtor tne buying power,
giving the market an easy appearance.
Cash rye was neglected and rather weak
selling at an increased discount under the
Ittiurea .
Leading futures ranged as follows;
WHEAT.
