Lower Money Rates Also Stimulate
Trading Tone of Bond
Market Better.
NEW YORK, Feb. 14. Pronounced
strength was displayed by today's stock
market almost from the outset. Accumu
latlon of buying orders over the doubl
holiday, futher settlement of short con
tracts and relaxed money rates were the
propelling factors.
Highest prices were registered In th
finsl hour, that period being concurred
with ths decline ot call loans irom a 10
ncr cent. IJrvidend Davlns rails and stand
ard industrials of the steel, equipment, oil
and miscellaneous divisions made net gains
of two to almost five joints.
Sentiment among traders respecting fed
eral tax lesislatloh seemed to bo more
hopeful.
Moderate Increase of production by Inde
pendent steel manufacturers in middle
western territory accompanied Intimations
that the proposed sleel mergers were pro
gressing towards consummation.
Exchange on Ixindon made a vigorous
recovery from last Saturday s reaction
The rally, reflected the buoyant tone of
the markets at that center. Demand bills
on London at $4.36 were 3 He over the
recent low. and advances of 4 to 11 points
In the allied exchanges were overshadowed
by gains of 8 to 22 points in other, conti
nental quotation?, notably those on Hol
land. Denmark. Norway and Sweden. Ths
German rate alone held back, marks malt
inar onlv the slightest gailk.
Time money rates were more rigid than
demand Quotations, few loans other than
those of 30 to DO days being made at less
than 5 per cent, the latter rate prevailing
for all long-time maturities. High-grade
merchants' paper was quoted at 4 per
cent, but no acceptances were reportea
- Bonds showed a tendency to improve as
stock market operations expanded.

Market at One Time Shows Gain
or Fully 6 Cents Shortage -
In World Supply Feared.
CHICAGO, Feb. 14. Rushes to buy
wheat today lifted the price of that com
modity fully 614c a bushel at one stage
of the day's transactions. The urgency
of traders was generally explained as the
result of a preceding big rise of values
in European markets. 'The finish here
was strong, o4c to 6c net higher, with
May $1.3814 to $1.38 and July $1.214
to $1.2114. Corn gained IV50 to 1 i c, oats
lc to 4c, and provisions 17 20c to
3uc.
With knowledge that wheat in Liverpool
was being quoted today at equal to more
than $1.&0 & bushel. American money,
whereas wljeat in Chicago was recently
selling at less than $1, the majority of
traders here took at - once to the buying
side of the market. In a twinkling the
price jumped to the highest point yet
achieved by the July, delivery and to new
-high figures for May since the recent up
ward movement of values began. News
of disappointing threshing returns In Ar
gentlna added to prevailing anxrtety about
the apparent scarcity of world's supplies
ana so, too, did continued adverse crop
advices from the southwestern sportion of
tne domestic winter wheat belt. Selling
to take profits brought about setbacks in
price late but before the day was ended
tne market- resumed its upward swing.
with fresh Impetus coming from renorts
ot an enlarged demand for flour and frojn
announcement of a decrease in the United
States visible supply of wheat. There
was also talk of a big export business in
wheat having been put through at the
seaboard.
Corn and oat prices reflected to some
extent the action of the wheat market
and were also helped upward by an antic
ipation that 25,000 tons of corn grits would
be bought tomorrow for Russian famine
relief: S
Provisions ascended In price with grain
and hogs.
The Chicago .rain letter receiver! ve
terday by the Overbeck A Cooke eomnanv
of Portland follows:
Wheat The atre'nirth In foreign. mor
kets was fully reflected at the oneninei
today and the market thereafter was com
pelled to digest a tremendous volume of
liquidation which appeared to come from
all directions. The real mystery was
where the wheat disappeared. It seemed
as if the advance strengthened rather than
weakened the technical position. There
was little bear news to be found aside from
the reports of snow in Kansas, the extent
of which was confined to the eastern and
southern part of the state. One message
from the east reporting offers to re-sell
from the United Kingdom at Saturday's
basis received little credence; in fact, ad
vances were much to the contrary. One
prominent exporter said the buying re
cently had exceeded all expectations and
that a significant feature is that the-purchases
are being made for shipment to
arrive on the other side about the same
time as the new Argentine and Australian
wheats. We see no indications of a re
actionary tendency at this time.
Corn The market was active and strong,
closing at the best price of- the day de
spite heavy receipts over the holidays,
which caused an easier spot trading basis:
While the export demand contributes ma
terially to the immediate strength of the
market, the paramount factor from an in
vestment viewpoint is the feeding volume
of corn based in livestock prices.
Oati Advanced with other grains and
on buying emanating from the northwest.
A few weeks ago that section of the coun
try was the principal seller in the way of
hedging. The cash department was with
out feature, the basis being fractionally
lower, due to the accumulation of receipts
over the holidays and an indifferent de
mand. It will not be long until the spring
demand for oats asserts itself in the
market.
Rye Trade was large with an increased
volume of outside investment buying
noticeable. There was also some buying
by the east, presumably against sales for
export. Cash rye was firm at 4 cents
under May for No. 2 on track.
