CHICAGO, Feb. 7. Rushes t buy wheat
today met with profit-taking- sales In
treat volume. As a result new advances
in price were only maintained in part.
The closing was unsettled, h to 0-net
higher, with May 91.28tt to $1.23 and
July $1.11H to fl.llH. Corn lost to
lriSc; oats finished one ha need to c
lower, and provisions -at a decline of 12
to Sue
At first wheat here scored an upturn of
about 2c, chiefly because of encourage
meat which buyers had received from
word of a fresh rise in values at Liver
pool and Buenos Aires. Ba tern ess to pur
chase was given further impetus owing; to
report of probable heavy abandonment of
acreage in Kansas and because of talk or
the presence of the green bug pest In
Oklahoma. The fact, however, that there
had recently been an advance of 21 cents
here was apparently believed by many
traders to have discounted all factors
enough. Selling to realize profits took on
huge proportions and for a time caused
the market to lose more than the early
advance. A moderate rally which ensued
during the late trading was due In the
main to covering by shorts.
Corn and oats, after touching In ome
cases the highest prices this season, gave
way under profit-taking sales and an in
crease of country offerings.
Selling ascribed to packers weakened the
provision market after a small ad vanes
had been brought about through higher
quotations on hogs.
The Chicago grain letter, received yes
terday by the Overbeck A Cooke company
of Portland, follows:
Wheat There was a general rush to buy
wheat at the opening, but the advance
brought out a tremendous volume of liqui
da.ticn, w hich overwhelmed the buying
power and resulted in a setback of nearly
3 cents from the high point. The disturb
ing tactor was the weakness in Chicago
cash premiums, although this was at
tributed to lack of storage facilities, duo
to the large stocks of coarse grains In this
pity. The foreign news was exceedingly
bullish, with Liverpool prices 3 to
cents higher and Buenos Aires up 7 to 8
cenrs from the previous close. There is no
doubt but that stocks on the o.her side
are down to a minimum and must be re
plenished. Their position is strongly em
phasised by the action of their market,
only while 300.000 bushels were confirmed
as having been sold for export today, ad
vices from ths seaboard were to the ef
fect that all offerings made over nifrht
were sccepted. Reports of the growing
crop in the southwest are becoming alarm
ing and will increase In number when :
warmer weather shows up the damage. :
We would, regard this easiness In cash
premiums as strictly a local consideration ;
and recommend a bullish attitude based
on the world situation.
Cora Selling credited to leading longs 1
and a moderate volume of pressure against ,
cash pui chases in the country proved too.:
much fr ths buying power, and the market i
declined sharply after the early advance. 1
There were no important news developments 1
of a sort to permanently arrest the upward
trnd of prices. The cash demand was good
with the trading basis well maintained, j
The seaboard reported some expu-t busl-1
ness done, but bids In the local market I
were slightly out of line. The Cnlted
States has the cheapest corn market in
the wot Id and' It is reasonable to assume
that Europe will look to us for supplies.
At the same time, corn as a domestic prop
ortion has a feeding value materially
higher than present quotations indicate,
and this in itself should be sufficient to
establish prices at this high level.
Oats Showed strength early, but de
clined later with other rains. Receipts of
110 cars sold at yesterday's basis. While
an Important demand has not as yet ap
peared for this grain, its statistical posi
tion is much the same as that of wheat.
The bulk of the surplus is In the visible
supply, while stocks In all positions are in
the aggregate below the ordinary domestic
requirements for the period from February
1 to July 1.
Rye There was a moderate trade in fu
tures, with the action of prices following
the changes in wheat- Some buying by
seaboard interests took place, presumably
agbinM saies for export. The cash bams
was strong at 4 cents under May for No. 2

FRANCE'S STABIIaTTY
rT,HOSB who were reading: cur
rent French history Just prior
to the war will remember with
what anxiety the government of
that country was viewing the
rapid rise 0$ communism and the
spread of the doctrine of "inter
nationalism." When France called
her people to arms full prepara
tions were made to a suppress by
force if necessary, this disloyal
element. But such action was not
necessary. Even the leaders of
the movement were ready to enlist
in. their country's defense.
Since the war this element of'
discontent and Insubordination has
made but a feeble attempt to get
upon its feet. There is a reason
for this, and more than one. But
the chief is that the French as a
people have an inyested interest
in France. There are 10,000,000
people in France who are owners
of real estate nearly one-third of
the entire population. No other
great European nation can make
such a showing. France Is essen
tially an agricultural country, a
nation, of little farmers.

The factory worker In France
who now is not satisfied with his
wages or his living conditions, can
run away from It to the farm, for.
the farm Is el)ort of help. There
are practically no idle hands in
France, for more than a million
and a half pairs of the best hands
France had, are now buried along
the battle zone. To take the place
of these lost laborers thousands of
Poles, starved and out of work at
home, have come In; thousands of
Italians have come for temporary,
employment; thousands of African
territorials and Chinese, left over
from war service, are still in
France, and many of these we
may well believe, will remain and
in years to come become a blended
part of the French population.
