WHEAT PRICES SOARING
ADVANCES RANGE VP TO FOUR
CENTS IN CHICAGO MARKET,
Big Bulge at Liverpool Stimulates
. Buying on Heavy Scale; Drouth
in Southwest Continues.
CHICAGO, Feb. 2. Wheat prices Jumped
hero today to the highest point since Oc
tober 4. It was - contended that United
States hard winter wheat is at present
the cheapest wheat in the world. The
market closed strong1 at 1?4c net gain,
with May l.23H to $1.23., and July
$1.07 to $1.07 fe. Corn finished c
to c up; oats ascended -V4 to 9b c and
provisions 17 to 87c.
More attention to world supply and de
mand conditions was given by wheat
traders today than has been the case for
a long while. The immediate reason was
a big bulge In prices at Liverpool, which
resulted in dissipating belief that export
business from the United States was over
for the season. A general rush to buy
took place aa soon as the market opened,
and at no time thereafter were offerings
plentiful enough to equal the demand.
Excessively cold weather and high winds
in the dry area of the domestic winter
crop tended further to lift wheat values,
and so did word that between 400,000 and
500,000 bushels of rye had been purchased
for export. Soaring of prices here con
tinued throughout the session and the
close was at the topmost level reached.
Corn and oats were rather neglected
and they failed to keep up with the pace
set In the wheat market. Nevertheless,
bcth the feed grains reflected to some ex
tent the results of the increase in demand
for breadstuffs.
Higher quotations on hogs helped to
lift the price of provisions.
The Chicago grain letter, recelred yes
terday by the Overbeck & Cooke company
of Portland, follows:
Wheat Prices advanced sharply today'
on the largest volume or trade in many
months. It was a bull market, given im
petus by higher cables from Liverpool and
Buenoa Aires after the advance got well
under way. There was little pressure in
evidence and a strong technical position
'was apparent. .-Aside from advances in
foreign markets intimations of 'large ex
port sales, together with a broader do
mestic flour demand, gave the outlook an
extremely bullish appearance. Although
on the surface there is very little display
or alarm over crop reports, there is little
doubt but that a good part of the for
eign and domestic buying is being stim
ulated by low condition of new winter
wheat crop In the southwest. The Kansas
and Oklahoma state reports issued today
said tbe crop in many important sections
is in bad shape, and the Indiana report
said some damage is showing up in south
ern counties as a result of thawing and
freezing with iack of proper snow pro
tection. Even after today's advsnce,
American, hard winter wheat is at a slight
discount under competitive countries de
spite the fact that they have surpluses
to market while ours has long since been
sold. The position of wheat in the United
States is not of a sort to combat a. strong
world situation.
Cora Ths response tbi m&xket jta
tbe advance In wheat was rather feeble,
due apparently to an indisposition on the
part of the investment public to take hold
until the present influx from the country
is out of way. At the same time. It Is
evident that this weight of cash grain on
the market is being minimized by a per
sistent export demand in addition to fairly
liberal domestic absorption. It may take
a while longer to fully digest the selling
by the country, but with livestock on a
basis which makes corn worth from 75
cents to 1 a bushel as a feeding prop
osition, it is not logical to expect a re
cession of importance from this level.
Oats Trade was of moderate propor
tions atd as In com prices failed to re
flect the advance in wheat to any extent.
Cash was devoid of feature with receipts
light, but the demand indifferent, and,
therefore, well balanced. , What is needed
here is a broad shipping demand to make
inroads on the visible supply. In the
meantime, prices are cheap.
Rye Tra-de was fairly active with a
good proportion of the buying for seaboard
account against export sales. Messages
from the east placed the export business
for the day at About 500,000 bushels. Cash
was steady at 2 cents under May bid for
