Predictions "Of Rain or Snow for
' Domestic Grain Belt Also
Bearish Influence.
CHICAGO. Jan. 81. Wheat prices re
ceded today, owing .argely to the failure
of foreign markets to follow yesterday's
advance here. The close was weak to
lc net lower, with May $1.18 to $1.18
and July $1.04 to $1.04. Corn lost to
c. and oats to c. Provisions gained
Irom 2 to 55 cents.
Belief that something of a set-back in
wheat could well be looked for was appar
er.tly prevalent, based to a considerable
extent on the fact that there had been a
sharp advance of late. The absence of
any new upturn at Liverpool tended,
therefore, to emphasize weakness of values
here arid- this tendency was given further
Impetus by a decided drop in quotations
at Buenos Aires and by predictions of rain
or snow for the domestic grain helt.
Corn and oata were depressed by heavy
receipts of corn.
Provisions Tvent up in value with hogs.
The Chicago grain letter, received yes
terday by the Overbeck A Cooke company
of Portland, follows:
Wheat The action of the market today
gave the impression that for the time
being it is In debatable ground and this
theory caused considerable liquidation of
long contraots. The news of the day was
less favorable to higher prices. The
weather map disclosed better conditions
in the southwest with moisture in a good
many sections and more predicted for to
night and tomorrow. Bid from the United
Kingdom have been advanced the past
few days, but not in line with the upturn
in our prices. Cash markets were easier
with premuims on red wheat In Chicago
reduced one cent. The urgency of the
demands for wheat abroad is emphasized
in the fact that Argentine prices, with
their crop just coming on . market, are
higher than American, while at the same
time it Is acknowledged that the United
States at this time Is virtually over-exported.
Corn This market wae slugglish most
of the day, suffering from lack of buying
power "to offset the selling by long and
cash houses against country purchases.
Receipts again large and the demand in
different at a slight decline in the trad
ing basis. The disparity between livestock
and corn prices has not as yet served as
a stimulant to the. latter, but will prob
ably be influential a little later on and
we doubt that declines from this level
will be important.
Oats Support less in evidence and prices
declined under the .pressure of scattered
selling by longs. Cash demand for past
few days has been a little disappointing
and the spot trading basis today was
lower on small receipts.
Rye Futures lower in sympathy with
wheat. Cash rye was nominally steady
at two cents under May for No. 2 on
track.
Leading future ranged a follow:
