Large Deals in Calfskins May
Influence Market.
SELLERS ACCEPT DECLINE
A boat Three Hundred Thousand
Skins Moved at Eastern and
31iddle Western Paints.
While th hide market It quiet In all
eect'ona, the recent iudden revival In the
calfskin market hai encouraged sellers of
hide to believe that this ma possibly be
the forerunner of more reneral activity
In ai: varieties of raw stock. On various
occarlons last year any appreciable activ
ity in calfskins was followed jr more
business In hides.
For some time past, the calfskin market
had been very much neglected, with prices
gradually weakening and sellers unaole
-to interest buyers except at concessions.
Karly last week, however, one of the Chi
cago packers who had been accumulating
skins for seven months bookM all of his
stock, amounting to about 83, ooo skins, for
tanning account. The removal of such a
large stock from the mantec evidently
helped the situation, as a re w days later
another Chicago packer sold 40,000 skins
to a western tanner at 17e. These skins
had been held in a nominal way for some
time past at lfc, but the price realised was
considered good. Another Chicago packer
sNo o!l a small quantity of rklns down to
17c. but this was followed by considerable
demand from tanner In general, and an
Indiana packer realized the advanced fig
ure ut JSc, At about the same time mid
dle KeHtern city skins began to move, with
'sales of these at 17c, as against the prev
ious quotation of lflc. Later transactions
brought prices on these city skins up to
17'c and isc.
Calfskins had also been accumulating In
the markets, and the active demand In the
west caused Increased strength In New
York. Karly last week quite a buying
movement started in New York city skins,
culminating In sales of about 50,000 of
these at an advance of 5c per skin, or at
for a to 7 pounds. $2 OS for 7 to 9
pounds and $2.o5 for- 9 to 12-pound
wefithta. Country and small city skins also
moved more freely and one sale was ef
fected of a lot of 10.000 French city 8 to
15-pound skins at 32c, c. 1. t New York,
which price was higher than any buyer
here would have paid previously.
The exact quantity of skins sold during
the pact week or so cannot be given defi
i.ltelv, but It Is conservatively estimated
that the total transactions east and west
have aggregated at least 300,000 calfskins.

Speculative Stocks Break With
Heary Selling.
NEW TORE, Jan. 26. Pools encountered
determined opposition today in their fur
ther efforts to advance prices of specu

pressure combined to deflect revenues of
two to five points, the reaction incidentally
uncovering many "stop loaa" orders.
Leaders of the Industrial and special
groups, such u Davidson Chemical, Gulf
State Steel 'and the various motor. oW,
equipment, surgar and miaceUaneoua issues
fluctuated wlidiy and eloped for the mom

the main.
Much heavy selling In the final hour
followed the announcement that the Con

With advices at hand that Argentine
farmers were offering wheat freely and
that prices both at Buenos Aires and
Liverpool showed a setback, wheat here
gave evidence from the outset that buy
ers were at a disadvantage. Word that
50.000 barrels of flour had been sold for
export from the United States led after

Besides. St. Louis reported liberal sales
of wheat to millers. Upturns in price,
however, were not well maintained

Values of corn and oats worked down

activity of export call for corn was a
check against any material drop in prices.

The Chicago grain letter, received yes
terday by. the Overbeck & Cooke company
of Portland, follows: ,
Wheat while the market today lacked
a definite trend, prices held very well In
face of a general disposition to liquidate
contracts because of the weakness in se
curities and an easier turn In northwestern
cash premiums. Kansas City cash prices
also were lower, due to large receipts and
a rather Indifferent demand. Local ar
rivals are very small, and our market in
1 consequence holds firm when others are
weak. Local milling interests tooay
claimed a marked Improvement In the
flour Inquiry. It Is reasonable to expect
that Liverpool will be the barometer and
that market so far has shown little or no
signs of being over-burdened with wheat.
We see nothing In slitht at this time to
Justify the expectation of a permanent de
cline In values.
Corn Trade In futures was well bal
anced and prices feeld within a narrow
range. On receipts of 575 cars, the cash
market was relatively steady. The market
for some little time has been on a basis
to give farmers down-state about 40 cents
a bushel and It Is now understood that the
bulk of the corn held at that price has
been cleaned up. At the same time there,
Is little if any indication of an abatement
In the export demand. Shipping sales out
of Chicago today totaled 520,000 bushels,
of which 500,000 bushels went to exporters.
The outlook for a strong market and
higher prices is very encouraging.
Oats Liquidation ' through commission
houses was rather conspicuous, but had
only a moderate influence on prices. There
was nothing of vital Importance In the
day's developments, although the shipping
demand was good w4th sales of 150,000
bushels reported. The futures market has
a sound foundation in the sense that pres
sure from the country Is virtually out of
the question.
Rye Futures were neglected and weak
ened with other grains. The cash market
was relatively steady with No. 2 quoted at
8 cents under May.

ONEY continues to
come down. Watch
the daily quota
tions. As money comes
down bonds go up, par
ticularly long-term bonds.
Monev has not vet come
down to normal. Bond prices are far from being up to normal.
There is great opportunity for bonds purchased at present prices
for income, to yield as well a large profit upon resale.
Time money has frequently been down to 42 of late. Time
money has not touched 4Vi since early in 1917.
Call money has recently been down to 3Vzcc. Call money
has not, since July, 1918, been down to 3V2CC. If you
do not have money immediately available to pay fully for prime
bonds that are offering, buy long-term bonds, anyway. Use
our Partial Payment Plan. Money is cheap to us and we will
gladly carry them for you.
For example, buy the 20-year Department of ihe Seine 7s at
90J2. to yield 7.95 to 8.75, according to date redeemed.
An income on your funds of 7.95 for twenty years is an oppor
tunity not to be sneezed at, particularly when one realizes that it
is offered by the third city in size in the whole world, with a
population fifteen times the size of Portland, comprising in effect,
and in fact, what is known as a county in this country.
The city of Paris and its environs, a total of 185 square
miles, are pledged to pay by direct general tax these bonds, both
principal and interest, in United States Gold Coin in New
York. The loan was authorized by the French Government.

Vhat Engineers Say
The following is quoted from a
recent article in the Literary
Dipeat: "Eminent engineers con
sider resiliency of prime 1 m p o r
tance and infinite value in the
construction of roads and pave
ments. The same principle holds
good with theae as wtih shock
absorbing tires and rubber heels.
The Inability of risld, non-resilient
pavement to Iron themselves out'
under modern traffic ia the reason
for this peneral belief among engi
neers." The resiliency in Warren-ite-BitulIthic
pavement is what
qualifies it to absorb the impact
of heavy loads, and that explains
why this type wears longer than
others.
