PORTLAND RIDERS
TO BUY 8 HORSES
Animals to Come From Walla
Walla Stables.
HUNT CUUB MAKES DEAL!
Mountu to He Offered to Local En
UiusiaHts and Taken by Organ
ization if Xot Sold.
K I it lit new saddle horses, all suit
able for the hunt and declared to be
of show ring class, will be added to
the list of 1'ortland owned horses
within the next few weeks, according
to an announcement made yesterday
by J(. M. Kerron, master of fox hounds
of the Portland Hunt club.
The horses are from the stables
of .Matt G. Knnis of Walla Walla,
breeder of hunters and Baddle horses,
and are either thoroughbred or stand
ard bred or crosses between the two
lines. The deal constitutes the first
sizeable consignment of high-grade
horses ever bought in the northwest
from a northwest dealer. Heretofore
buyers have looked to the eastern
or middle western stables for show
horses, although several Portland
owned horses have come singly from
the Ennis stables.
Bnyrrej to Inspect Anlinnl.
An option was taken last week by
H. M. Kerron on the eight horses
and they will be shipped to Portland
soon for inspection by their pros
pective buyers. At least five of the
shipment will bo turned over to per
sons who have been looking for sad
dle horses or hunters and are ready
to buy as soon aa they are suited.
The others will be offered to sev
eral other persons who have , been
looking for horses. If not taken,
they will go to the stables of the
Portland Hunt club for the use of
members not owning mounts.
K. A. Martin, director of the club,
who is one of the leading horsemen
of Portland, had occasion recently
to inspect the Knnia stables. He de
clared that the eight horses to come
to Portland aro all likely ribbon win
ners, and gave as his opinion that
they would make a noticeable differ
ence in Portland's share of the win
nings at night horse shows to come.
Armament Best Mount.
The best of the lot is said to be a
three - gaited man's sadd'.e horse
named Armament, declared by Mr.
Knnis to possess the greatest possibil
ities of any horse he ever produced,
and to be able to compete with any
high-class horse that might be en
tered in the Portland show. Arma
ment Is half thoroughbred and half
standard bred, golden sorrel In color,
18 hands high and 4 years old.
The other horses included in the
purchase are:
Rosemary A three-galted black (addle
home, 14 hands high; a woman's or child''
mount.
Paaserose, a three-galted standard-bred
black mare ot the woman numer oi
addle type.
Hampion, a bay hunter, said to possess
treat speed and ability to jump; man''
hunter type.
Rockspray, a three-salted saddle horse,
gray in color and 10.2 hands high.
Ourson. three-galted woman's saddle
florae, show ring- type and bay In color,
13.2 hands high.
Foxtail, a 15-hand cob, handy hunter
type, described as of the same conforma
tion aa the high Jumper," Corn Cob, and
with ability to become a high Jump show
home.

die hone, with color, atyle and action for
a show horse; described aa an all-around
hone for the bunt, straight hacking or

STAGING 1922 EVENT.
Financial Statement of Divisions
or Gate Receipts for Last
Matches Being Mailed.
NEW YORK, Jan. 1. (By the As-
sociated Press.) Financial state-j
ments of the division of. sate receipts
and other business details in connec- i
tion with the Davis cup matches of
last summer are being forwarded to
t 11 the competing- nations this week
by the United States Lawn Tennis
association officials. Preparations for
the staging of the 1922 world's team
tennis championships goes hand in
hand with accounting of the 1921 pro
ceeds. Invitations calling attention to the
fact that entries will close on March
15 have been sent to all nations with
recognized tennis governing bodies.
Of the 12 nations which challenged
for the Davis cup in 1921 the leading
contenders are certain to try again
this summer and the Philippines, Ar
gentina and Belgian organizations,
which defaulted during the progress
of play, have intimated that their
players' will continue until elimin
ated, especially If the break of the
draw gives them preliminary matches
at or near home.
With Australia, Japan, the British
Isles, South Africa and France con
ceded to be the strongest challengers
at this time, interest in their appear
ance in this country next season will
bo Increased by the presence of new
players on several teams.
The marvelous veteran, Norman K.
Brookes, will head the Australian
toam and will have as co-challengers
Gerald Patterson, J. O. Anderson and
P. O'Hara-Wood. Patterson, who did
not make the trip from "down under"
last season, is said to have improved
greatly.
American tennis authorities lean to
the opinion that the proposed Aus
tralian combination will appear in
the challenge role late in August and
give the United States defenders a
bitter battle for the cup.

CLUB HOOPERS PRACTICE
MULTNOMAH GETS READY FOR
WHITMAN GAME.
Loss or 3 Stars Pending Settle
ment of Amateur Status Is
J 5 low to Team.
The Multnomah Amateur Athletic
club basketball team, which has been
more or less upset over the loss of
three of its stars, pending investi
gation of their amateur status, has
been practicing right along In prep
aration for its game against Whit
man college in the Multnomah gym
nasium tomorrow night.
Coach Borleske may be handicapped
at Whitman in not having enough
material for football, but that situa
tion doesn't apply in basketball.
Borleske always turns out one of the
best quintets on the coast. He is
alwavs in the running for the north
west conference title, which his
teams have won more than once
As usual, be has a good team this
season.
Whitman got off to a flying start
In Eugene early in the week by
defeating the University of Oregon
two games in a row. Whitman took
Monday night's game, 31 to 22. and
repeated Tuesday night, 24 to 15.
Both were hard games, but Whitman
always had them pretty well In hand.
The clubmen made their debut
against Oregon last Saturday night
and emerged victorious by a 40 to 33
score. But only a great rally in the
last half by Gus Clerln put tne
Winged M hoopers over. Clerln
registered nine baskets In the game,
five of them in the last halt, and it
was these points that won.
If Smith. Craig and Wapato are
granted amateur cards it will
strengthen the club team materially,
as all three are among Coach Dewey's
first string men. Ray Toomey, the
Multnomah manager, expects to see
at least two of them in the club
lineup tomorrow night against Whit
man. If all goes well the lineup
should start something like this;
Gus Clerin and Beck forwards. Craig
or Hugh Clerin center, and Twining
and Smith guards.
The Multnomah hoopers have been
put through some strenuous paces
this week by Coach Dewey. The
players blew up In the last half
against Oregon and Dewey does not
want that to oqcur again this Beason.
Consequently he had his squad out
Sunday afternoon, Monday night,
Wednesday night and last night.
They will rest today.
