Tjirvr;:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::":::::::;::::::::::::::::::::::::l I 1 1 I i::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::7.
Mrs. Maria Adcox, who shot herself
Jn the left breast early Tuesday night
when her husband, Luther L. Adoox,
hfad of an automobile and aviation
school, returned home suddenly to
find her hostess at a dinner party
which he knew nothing: about, was
reported as out of danger last night
at St. Vincent's hospital, and her re
covery was considered certain.
Many rumors and theories were
advanced yesterday at the police de
tective bureau regarding the near
tragedy, but, according to Dan E.
Powers, an attorney, who accompa
nied Adcox to his home, 685 Sickiyou
street, there was no fighting and no
scuffling when Mr. Adcox entered the
borne.
Entrance Effected Quietly.
According to Mr. Powers, Adcox en
tered quietly and asked Mrs. Adcox
and Eugene C. Habel. automobile
dealer, to sit down with him and talk
matters over that they might come to
a thorough understanding. Adcox,
according to the attorney, asked the
other dinner guests, Mrs. M. Case and
Charles Glass, to leave the house.
But Habel, according to both Mr.
Towers and the detectives, did not
wait upon ceremony to make his
exit. He rushed upstairs. Jumped out
of a second-story window and fled.
Mr. Powers said he remained In the
house a short time and then decided
to leave, thinking that the couple
were cool enough to nettle their dif
ferences quietly.
Attorney Hear Shot.
He had gone less than a block, he
said, when he heard a shot. A moment
later Adcox appeared at the door and
shouted for him to return because
Mrs. Adcox had shot herself.
Mrs. Adcox and Habel are said by
both Adcox and Mr. Powers to have
been on friendly terms for some time,
and Adcox had returned home unex
pectedly on purpose in order to sur
prise the couple and endeavor to
make them realize that their meet
lugs had to come to an end.
The attempt of Mrs. Adcox to take
her own life apparently has resulted
In a complete reconciliation between
the couple, Mr. Powers said. The
husband remained at her bedside at
the hospital throughout the night, and
was there again yesterday. A sister
of the wounded woman also arrived
yesterday from Vancouver, 13. C
Police Drop Investigation.
The police made no arrests yester
day and apparently have dropped fur
ther Investigation, It was reported at
the detective bureau. They are sat
isfied from the statements by Mr.
Powers and others at the house that
Adcox was not armed when he en
tered his home, nor did he make any
threats against his wife's life.
' Kenneth Stoll, who accompanied
Adcox and Mr. Powers, had- a re
volver in his possession, which Mr
Powers threw away before he per
mitted them to enter the house.

Rockpilo Is Idle for Two Months
and Commissioners Asked to
Make Investigation.
Demand for an investigation into
the reason that prisoners sent to Kelly
Butte rockpile have bad notning to
do for the last two months was made
by Sheriff Hurlburt yesterday to Mult
nomah county commissioners.
Roadmaster Eatchel said that a
broken shaft in crusher machinery
was responsible for Bome of the de
lay, but that he knew of no reason
for not going ahead when that was
repaired. The sheriff asserted that
the rock-crushing operations, which
are under the control of the road
master's office, were suspended when
ever the main bunkers were full.
Mr. Eatchel replied that this did
not follow, that rock could be re
moved by '.he conveyor system in
stalled from a side bunker into large
piles as rapidly as the large bunkers
were filled, and that it was necessary
to keep the latter full to supply de
mands for rock.
Sheriff Hurlburt said this vas
"bunk," that impediments constantly
were being placed In the way of op
eration of the rock pile and asked an
investigation of the responsibility
underlying the delay. The commis
sioners promised to look ltto the
matter. '
Dance hall permits all over the

Commissioner Hoyt against permit

matter of the permit for the Ringler
pavilion was taken under advisement
because of a dispute between the
owner and Joe Relg, proprietor of a
second dance pavilion at Columbia
beach.
Permission to operate on Sundays
was granted With the provision that

Assertions that the use of narcotics
